Offensive as these acts are, they are defended by the freedom of expression argument, which is tradition and political culture in Western democracies. Their own leaders, prophets and religions have not escaped caricature abuse or what might constitute insult. The governments, media and society don’t even take notice of such productions. They ignore such writers, producers and abusers, terming them ‘nuts’. Nor does the general public care about the ‘nuts’. Some of them may buy and read or watch such material and laugh it over. Let us be clear, the West has a culture of tolerance, freedom of expression and celebration of creativity, even when it crosses some established cultural norms. Government actions there are constrained by law.
Those of us who understand a bit of American or European intellectual tradition know well that deviation from common social standards is becoming a norm more than an exception. Its justification lies in personal, individual choices and freedom of expression. The conservative sections of society there lament about it but cannot do much to curtail individual freedoms.
Attacks on Islam and the demonising of Muslim culture and society by some extremist groups exploit freedom of expression. However, these acts are planned and they deliberately seek to provoke Muslims. We have reacted the way they wanted us to react by burning down and killing ourselves. Sadly, a French magazine followed suit by publishing insulting cartoons and selling all copies within 24 hours — only adding more fuel to the fire. We have the right to protest against the production of abusive material. But shutting down the government and every public and private institution is not the right way. Governments can protest by issuing statements or writing letters to foreign governments over such matters and provide designated space to the public for protest.
In our case, protests are too many, by too many factions, on too many issues, and on too many days. Pakistan has adopted a culture of protest as marches on the street happen all year round, on one issue or another. On all streets, cities towns and space from the mosques to markets, the protesters consider it their right to march through. While doing so, they burn and destroy public and private property. They come prepared with sticks, stones and in some cities, firearm.
Hardly any protest continues without some violence. With an overplay of emotions, reason on leave, and the fanatics loose, we cannot know how to protest and influence world opinion on such an important issue like blasphemy. Our Muslim majority’s own hate material against Jews, Hindus, Christians and even our minority Muslim sects also goes without any check. This does not place us on any moral high ground to convince the world to take action against those who insult us.

@Mustaqeem Talish: why you are showing your ignorance , there is no such law about holocaust and there will never be one in the US as that will not comply with the constitution that provides each individual to express his thoughts without being afraid of the govt. When you have spineless leaders like Obama they may try to appease you by arresting the movie maker from another angle , but in the US there can never be a blasphemy law
@numbersnumbers:
His name is Tareq Mehanna. There are many other cases coming out as well where speech favorable to terrorists is being severely curtailed under the auspices of the material support statute. The starting point of this tend can be traced back to Holder v. Humanitarian Law project. But definitely check out the mehanna case. Also read Virginia v Black where they disallowed cross burning because it was being done with the intention of provoking conservative Christians. When u start reading their case law u begin to understand how empty this rhetoric of absolute freedom of speech( with which they constantly beat muslims) is. They make exceptions all the time for things to which they are historically sensitive, but to others they say 'we have freedom of speech, it's a beautiful thing, why don't u understand, u should adopt it as well, or at least get used to its exercise in the free countries of this world'.
@mav: You neglected to name the person "convicted for translating al qaeeda documents in English" please do so so we can look up the case.
Even a Nobel Price Winner could not excape the curse of being born in an Ahmadi Muslim (Dont tell me they are non-Muslims) family, Everyone on this planet should have religious freedom as long as it is not threatening the peace for other citizens). I am Hindu, but I cannot impose the whole world to not eat cow meat. I or anyone for this matter, should not interfere on how others live their life, religious or otherwise).
Till what extent will we request the WEST to certify our actions to be civilized?
The people who are ignorant of Muslim laws are more impressed cum depressed by the western values & become prey of inferiority complex.
Destructive Reaction by the protesters should be seen in specific situations & not be taken as being from the entire Muslim nation.
However, I wonder, what else WEST will do to make our scholars & rulers realize, its time to get violent?
I don't think it's fair to say that West has a tradition of unrestrained freedom of expression. They have exceptions to their laws as well. In Europe, Australia and Canada they have hate speech laws, and if u publicly deny Holocaust then u'll end up serving time in jail and probably pay a pretty hefty fine as well. Similarly, if u look at the recent first amendment law coming out of US Supreme court decisions over the kind of speech that people can make in support of terrorist activity, it clearly seems to create an exception to the first amendment law. Recently, they convicted a person for translating al qaeeda documents in English. His purpose was to make american people aware of the officially declared Al qaeeda reasons for attacking US. He was convicted nonetheless. So, the point is that westerners create exceptions to their free speech laws all the time based on their own historical sensitivities, but when muslims ask for a similar exception on issues that are sensitive to them, the West comes out with a rhetoric of unrestrained no exceptions freedom of speech tradition, which is not true. To me, it smells of hypocrisy and double standard.
@Mohammad saeed: Hold on... clearing my throat here... IT IS NOT ILLEGAL IN THE US
"Let us be clear, the West has a culture of tolerance, freedom of expression and celebration of creativity, even when it crosses some established cultural norms. Government actions there are constrained by law." It is for this freedom that many are willing to leave to those countries if they can get permission to immigrate and flee from their oppressive regimes however noble or beloved their home nations maybe.
"Our Muslim majority’s own hate material against Jews, Hindus, Christians and even our minority Muslim sects also goes without any check." Well said. If others tolerate hate material from Muslims, then it follows that Muslims should tolerate such material against Islam from others. Why don't the they realize that the best action against 'blasphemous' material is no action. You can not expect democratic countries to enact blasphemy law of the Pakistani kind for the sake of Islam.
@De:
"I still can’t understand how it’s freedom of expression when it’s clearly defamation and slander"
Defamation and slander are attacks on a person and do not apply to ideologies, philosophies, gods and prophets. All religions, ideologies should be subject to critique, questioning and even ridiculing as part of free speech.
What we have done others are getting back.
We do not follow what we preach.Islam is a religion of peace. Our Prophet(PBUH) taught us to be good human being.Mecca was conquered without any bloodshed and Abu Sufian house was declared protected area. We have no right to protest because we do not follow the basic teaching of Islam.
@De: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" - Voltaire
This qoute explains "Freedom of Speech"
We have no right to protest, because we do not practice what we preach. Islam is a religon of peace. It teaches us to be good human beings. Our Prophet(PBUH) conquered Mecca without bloodshed and Abu Sufian house was declared protected area.
Very well written!!!
"Sadly, a French magazine followed suit by publishing insulting cartoons and selling all copies within 24 hours — only adding more fuel to the fire." I bet, most of the copies would have been purchased by Islamic radicals to fan more violence and protests!!!
Very few sane writers like him left in Pakistan! Pakistanis are in self destructive mode & in total denial.
Now I know for sure that there is at least one person in Pakistan who has the integrity to look in the mirror and speak the truth about what he sees.
Is there any freedom of speech/expression about Holocaust (Jewish killings by Hitler ) in Europe or USA....... One can not even talk or research about holocaust there .... There are strictest laws about Holocaust ....... Why cant we present our case for having laws about blasphemous material at an international level....
I am not defending the violent acts made by Pakistanis and/or other muslim states in their respective states, but one question: Why in the West (which apparently is a paragon of social justice and a champion of freedom of speech) are people held accountable under law for any statements or 'speech' made against the holocaust??
Excellent article.
@realist - before you sing India's praises, let me get this straight. This is the same country where nuns were raped, Muslims were massacred in Gujrat riots deliberately, babri Masjid desicrated. People who sit in glass houses.....!
If "The Satanic Verses" by Salman Rushdie had been ignored completely by the Muslim world nothing more of the blasphemy game would have happened. Now that Pakistan has behaved in the way desired by the enemy, expect more of the same. The French humor magazine which came out with new cartoons has already cashed-in hurriedly. Get ready for more.
@De: Muslim holy scriptures are a good example of freedom of expression against other religions.
Sir,
I am sure you did not even read "The Satanic Verses" and are commenting on it. This book's central theme is, every good human has a satanic tendency and any satan like person has goodness in him. The rest is like historical fantasy and a freedom to express oneself.
Your mention of it is un-necessary, but of course it gives a sense of legitimacy to your artical.
Excellent article , thank God I'm not reading another crap about restriction of speech . Muslims need to grow up instead of wanting the rest of the world become similarly immature and act out when someone offends their religion from dark ages !
Do these protesting idiots know that their demonstrations are causing any damage to USA but destroying their own properties. The author's last point is true Muslims demand respect for their religion but do not respect other religions.
This is the best Op Ed on this subject period. I have very high standards and I congratulate the author and ET for a simple yet effective Op Ed. With our overreaction we have only proved to the world how to get us going. They would do it again and again now.
Excellent as always, Dr Rais. One of the few sane voices we have in Pakistan.
Rasul Bakhsh Ji, Your essay well taken but we also need to keep in mind that we are very perceptive people. Anything small can inflame our feelings and we go rampage for no reason. You have lived in this country and know quite well that people do several things that may be antagonistic but others just ignore it and move on with their lives. Second, if someone made a video, what the government or members of the diplomatic community have to do with it? The fact is that it is very difficult for an average Pakistani to comprehend the distance between the public and private sphere in the U.S. I think we need to show some prudence and maturity when analyzing the things, be these related to religion or matters of foreign policy. Emotionalism and rushing to conclusions is not going to help us.
You want a measured way to protest agianst something? You can look to India as she protested against banning the Gita in Russia. India/Hindus have also protested when an American brewery named beer "Kali-Ma". The Brewery apologized and agreed to re-name. The protests were all peaceful.
It is only Muslims who will resort to violence. Muslims cant impose their views on others when they dont allow other religions to practice their faith freely or to hold their views in Muslim dominated countries. Ask any Ahmedi how he feels when he feels filling out application to obtiain Pakistani passport.
Few days ago an American idiot had expressed his desire to spend summer vacation in golden temple ,Amritsar . Though Sikhs expressed anger , but it was nothing like the Muslims doing . Have some education and be educated .How long will you play with rocks and clubs ?The more you protest , the more will be the attack.
@De: You need to understand that 75% of the world do not share your faith and may not share the reverence you have for Islamic symbols of faith. - Do you show reverence for symbols of Hindu faith? No. You call Hindu Gods as false Gods and lionize butt shikans like Ghaznavi and Aurangzeb and upload videos on bakr Id of open cow slaughter - Do you show reverence for Christianity? No. You deny the divinity of Jesus and burn churches - Do you show reverence for Ahmadi symbols of faith? No you destroy their worsip places and desecrate their graves - Do you show reverence for Buddhism? No an Islamic head of state odered the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas.
Freedom of expression is not exactly the same thing as freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is protected; freedom of expression ends when it becomes an act or threat of violence or eminent danger of violence, termed as hate speech.
What the guy did in making a film in his country was protected by the freedom of speech law of his own country; what Pakistanis did would be treated as freedom of expression resulting in violence and threat of violence.
As non-Muslims cannot impose their religious etiquette on Muslims, neither should Muslims impose their reverence of Mohamed to non-Muslims.
Summary of a very well written article to simple minded person like me:
World is a global family now. Every country is a click away or flight away. I live in a joint family. I beat my wife everyday because she wears blue clothes, but I like black. She also happens to be weaker than me. One day my brother beats up his wife for a similar mundane reason and I try tell him that that is wrong. Change your ways.
How far that advice/argument will go? Thanks to the author. I hope I did not plagiarize. ..pc
Thank you. A voice with a conscience. God bless you and yours.
I still can't understand how it's freedom of expression when it's clearly defamation and slander
The clarity and logic with which you write is amazing.
