“I have lost a lot of money since the order was issued,” said Nadir Latif, the manager of PAF Cinema. “I am still at a loss of words as to why they are cracking down only on me.”
The order issued to Latif reads screening of Indian films must be stopped with an immediate effect.
According to Latif, the cinema was one of the few that were making profits.
He said that only five to six cinemas were currently functioning in around six cities across the country, compared to the time when an estimated 47 cinemas were functioning.
The Lahore Cantt cinema was important because it was fully renovated and upgraded after Latif had been given a lease of 10 years to operate the cinema.
“We created a state-of-the-art facility that catered to educated people. So for us Indian films have been very important for business,” said Latif who claims to have suffered huge financial losses as he had paid guarantees on three films Heroine, Raaz 3 and Barfi.
The cinema owner had invested between Rs200-300,000 in guarantee per film. “There are barely 13 prints that are issued in the country, so the closure of even one cinema means a great loss to the industry, I have ended up losing millions due to its closure.”
In the past, people within the film industry have raised the question of Indian films at various levels that an economic protectionist policy must be passed so that Pakistani films which lack the resources to compete with international films can do so.
Latif explained that Indian films have always been banned according to the 1965 Film Act, which ensured that no film directly from India could be censored in Pakistan.
Former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf during his tenure had simply issued an ordinance that allowed foreign films to be imported into Pakistan. Today, Latif claimed, most Indian films that come to Pakistan are distributed from Dubai or London.
Technically, most of these films are not considered Indian as the Ministry of Commerce and the Censor Board approve them.
According to the certificates presented by Latif, Raaz 3 had been distributed from England so technically, it could not even be called an Indian film.
“One cannot survive on simply Pashto and Lollywood films, there is a reason for the rapid decline of cinemas across the country. There has to be recourse for people who are searching for entertainment,” said Latif.
When asked whether the ban could have something to do with the string of protests against an anti-Islam film, he said that the order had been issued before five cinemas were burnt down in Karachi during the protests.
He further said that the cinema was safe as “Cantt is surrounded by check posts and we have our own security.”
PAF officials associated with the case refused to disclose the details as to why the cinema had been forced to close.
When asked about the issue surrounding the screening of Indian films, an officer responded with ignorance.
“We are officials of the armed forced and just implement orders given to us. We don’t ask questions neither do we use our brains to see the reasoning behind such orders,” said one of the officers.
Chairman Pakistan Film Exhibitors Association Zorraiz Lashari said that the exact motives behind the decision to close the cinema were unclear.
He said despite that, it was discouraging for a country which is striving to promote positive trade relations between both countries.
“The armed forces and PAF are independent entities which will do what they feel is right. I think on a larger scale it is bad because we are trying to develop positive relations with India,” said Lashari. “I think the decision is not rational, because it’s a dual policy. Families still watch Indian content through television and allowing 50-odd people to watch a film at the cinema should not be an issue.”

PAF Cinema deserved closing, because it had a very rude and ill mannered staff.
You can run as hard as you like from Indian Cinema. But you cannot escape it. You can shut a cinema house here or a movie theatre there. Can you shut down Youtube, DVDs, Internet and so on? Indian cinema is here to stay like all other things Indian are also here to stay. Love it or Hate it, India and her culture is a part of you and there is no escaping this fact.
Good decision by the PAF. I appreciate that. IMO:- =rationale of PAF cinema should supposed to provide entertainment to PAF personnel, so running Indian movies should be out of question. =one has to see are these films being shown legally (apart from what the cinema owners say). =ET title of the news seems biased. =how can you write a meaning less thing, that quoting anonymous officials , that they are supposed to implement orders without thinking. ET should've asked some responsible official, rather asking a peon or a security guard at the cinema regarding he policy of ban on Indian films.....
@Wipe Out: "We don’t ask questions neither do we use our brains to see the reasoning behind such orders,” said one of the officers". What an oxymoron since when have army officers shown any brains?
"The cinema owner had invested between Rs200-300,000 in guarantee per film" Well, Rs200-300,000, quite a Range !!
No to Indian movie in our Cinemas, yes to Tomatoes and potatoes from India. We can manage without Indian movies but not without tomatoes, potatoes, ginger and Garlic.
@Maria:
"he nation would be better off if we just watched Western films in English."
Of course, western films are a lot more Islamic than Indian movies.
@Maria: The revenue loss to India if these movies are banned is going to be minimal as someone ahead has pointed out. You may not enjoy Bollywood movies and you clearly don't have to watch them but English is not widely understood in Pakistan (that is why no English language TV channel has survived). So for most people this WAS the one eentertainment option available. IT is they who will be the losers.
@ anonymous, you sd "Believe me there can exist an excellent means of entertainment without cinemas." ==> What an ultimate Truth, The world, for sure, will realize this, now that you unveiled the Truth...
you also sd "Why not promote puppetry or excellent stage shows which actually have a decent plot and storyline, based on our cultural lifestyle and issues with which people can also relate to." ==> You mean, MUJRA???
does anyone know if this was a multiplex or a single screen cinema ?
@amused even arabia and iran watch bollywood movies these days. In Afganistan tulsi and mihir virani are household names. You can't stop india by banning our products in pakistan. Even pakistanis will buy the same indian products through other ways. Indian hindu culture will invade the whole world slowly in the form of Yoga, meditation, rising philosophy, food, dresses, classical dance, bollywood, our religious symbols.....Stop us if you can!
i've heard that people in pakistan have been watching hindi movies since vcr's made it into the country . after that cable and dvd's made it easier and now of course you have internet . so people in pakistan have been watching bollywood movies for atleast 30 or 40 years . but they were doing it illegally and your government was not getting any revenue . they started watching it legally for the past 5 or 6 years and as result multiplexes became viable . if bollywood movies are banned then all your new multiplexes will shut down . pakistani movie industry is not in a position to offer a new movie every week . people will not pay 400 or 500 to watch pakistani movies the way they are made today . certain films like 'bol' maybe an exception but just one or two good films a year cannot sustain multiplexes . instead if you allow indian films and at the same time encourage your own film makers maybe with financial and technical aid then your own movies will have outlets available to them . i hope this is only limited to the one cinema in question and more multiplexes are built in pakistan . good luck .
@anonymous: still better choose dogfight, cockfight or street fight as entertainment which r quite popular in Pakistan and more islamic
@Feroz: you r already 75% consumed
@Ashu: I for one don't think the public should be watching Indian films - above all in a PAF cantonment cinema. I think only the uneducated people watch Indian movies but the nation would be better off if we just watched Western films in English.
With all international sports events faded out of the country, this was the only entertainment left for this entertainment starved nation. The only option left would be to watch news channels showing 'score' after a suicide bomb.
First let's promote libraries and books for all ages, something that will stimulate the intellect instead of watching bollywood guys and gals shaking their private parts. People in the entertainment industry whether Hollywood or Bollywood happen to have one of the lowest IQs, just listen to them speak in an interview.
Why not promote puppetry or excellent stage shows which actually have a decent plot and storyline, based on our cultural lifestyle and issues with which people can also relate to. Why not get the community members together and arrange some sporting events in your neighbourhood.The possibilities are endless if we put our minds together, but sadly so many of us are enslaved to watching bollywood/hollywood or being addicted to the internet or social media.
Believe me there can exist an excellent means of entertainment without cinemas.
How about cinema owner running Moosa Khan in 3-D showing hindu bashing. That would cheer up Army folks as well.
Efforts are going on establish Pakistani domestic market of cinema. For infrastructure of cinema building. Indian movies are the main source to rapid market growth. But on the parlerel side destroyer are also active. In globale shrinkinking process ,we cannot live isolated. I donot like cultural invation but we cannot deny and stop it except leagalize many thing which we donot like. In the era of rapid changing world it is not proper tao think dogmatic way. Accept the realties and make good decion. Donot decieve us on name of patriotism.
@tit for tat: Accepted.
i think you should go for chinese fims raher.......... that might suit the pakistani film industry.......... ha ha ha... why don't u people . understand...u just simply can'tt live without bollwood films ......... your indusry might collapse as well.........
@Amused
"pakistanis should watch iranian and arabic movies, neways bollywood is crap"
You should let the viewer decide if the content of Bollywood films are crap or high art. I doubt the average Pakistani would care to watch an Iranian Oscar winning movie like A Separation, because Pakistanis don't share a culture, language or heritage with Iranians.
Iranian cinema is on par with the best of the best, however they are not fantasy filled musical escapades like most Bollywood films, which appeals to people of the sub continent.
If given a choice the average movie goer in Pakistan and India will not patronize a well written and deftly made Iranian movie about social issues when they can go watch a Bollywood bonanza full of action and song and dance routines.
I know for a fact that a huge percentage of people in Pakistan are interested in Indian movies
People should get what they want ?
Even if all theaters are closed, people will still see them on cds or internet because they like them,so the whole point of banning them in theaters or TV is defeated
The majority enjoys it and and will keep on doing so.
Why should an average Pakistani be devoid of entertainment when he has so many other pressures and challenges ?
The ruling elite has looted the country and will keep on enjoying the Indian films while the average person on the street has no money and will have no source of entertainment also ?
This is unacceptable and i am happy to know that Pakistanis love Bollywood cos we in India love your singers too
Ek tha Tiger does not released in Pakistan and still it collects 300 crores.
Pakistan is not a huge market for bollywood as more revenue come from a Smaller state Goa than whole Pakistan.
I think indians should bann Pakistani artist working in India as a reaction of this.
I think they just want to make sure that "The Return of Maula Jat" is a roaring success.
What a waste of time why not burn it down chaste n smokin' black win the Ummah crown
I find this article to be very amusing.
The highlight of the article is:
“We are officials of the armed forced and just implement orders given to us. We don’t ask questions neither do we use our brains to see the reasoning behind such orders,” said one of the officers.
What he is trying to say is that we are paid to work not think.
Shabaash you made me smile a big one.
So this person had paid 3 lakh Pakistani rupees for a movie like BArfi or Raaz 3 ad tere were 13 prints for each of these movies. In other words about 40 lakh Pakistani rupees or about 22 lakh Indian rupees incremental revenue for movies that got over 70 crores n India. India is surely not a loser here. The loser is the ordinary Pakistani who already has minimal entertainment sources other than shopping and eating out.
A larger point: First we close cinemas that show Indian movies, Next- showing Western movies, Next - Anything screening with music in it (against Islam fundamentals) Next - Anything with dancing females Next - Anything that shows any female w/o burqa Next - Anything with female characters Next - anything not stating and ending with a solemn pledge to the Military and Mullahs
Next - Just burn any cinema indiscriminately on a Peace-day, Wait we awe already did that. Am I in a time warp! My head is spinning, I am in a time machine...oh.oh...Crash..... Sound of silence....
Doc Brown to Marty: Whew..... we are safe. Thank GOD, Marty we just landed in 8th century.

in other news;;;;;;;;;;;Barfi is official entry to the Oscars in the foreign film category....
I decide what I should watch; not you.
As if it matters to India. An entire income from a country like Pakistan can be earned from just an advertisement by featuring it on Sony or Star Plus !!
I dont understand... I saw an Indian movie in a cinema in Karachi last week. If Indian movies are banned in Pakistan then shouldnt the law apply to all cinemas? How is it that every video shop in Pakistan sells Indian movies and a large percentage of our tv channels show Indian movies and shows? We are a country of double standards and if you can call it the law.. is rarely implemented unless someone is being blackmailed. Our judicial system is a joke and really would like to see real crimes/offences being given the justice they deserve.
Same people commenting above will dont mind to watch pirated dvds of Bollywood Movies.
Do Pakistan have guts to ban pirated Indian movies?
Watching Indian movies is wastage of time and Money. Ban all that stuff in Pakistan and we should make our own movies with class, just like the dramas and songs. Indian stuff is polluting the youth.
@sh(india): true
Once all cinemas are burned or shut down, once all video parlours are closed, once all shops selling music are destroyed, once everything connected with entertainment is banned - then Pakistan will become a great power...
...wait - wasn't the same tried by Taliban in Afghanistan ?
The armed forces and PAF are independent entities which will do what they feel is right. I think on a larger scale it is bad because we are trying to develop positive relations with India,” said Lashari.
Mr Lashari please be informed every month more than 16 percent of my monthly salary is deducted through Taxes and every person in Pakistan is paying taxes only to keep afloat our Huge Army You are not an Independent entity and you are actually enjoying on the expense of Tax Payer's money of Pakistan and bye the way we are not expecting this statement from you that you are eating on our handouts and then telling Pakistani Public dont mess with you so called independent entity. Also we are not giving this money to you to make Cinemas and DHA Housing schemes while we are giving this money to secure Our Borders and eliminate Terrorism and you are miserably failed on that front.
This Politics of hate will consume the country.
@ sh(India) Xactly.likewise Indian channels should also be banned in Pakistan.cos Pakistani channels are banned in India.tit for tat policy,you know!
good
pakistanis should watch iranian and arabic movies, neways bollywood is crap.
sigh . we have pretty less entertainment options in cities . Cinema is once again getting popular nowadays as a family entertainment mode . Ban is beyond understanding
“We are officials of the armed forced and just implement orders given to us. We don’t ask questions neither do we use our brains to see the reasoning behind such orders,” said one of the officers. That's Why....
"We don’t ask questions neither do we use our brains to see the reasoning behind such orders,” said one of the officers.
Nor do the rest of us. Civilians and soldiers aren't that different after all. Unity!
Excellent, should be carried on to all the cinemas, and I hope this is carried out soon in all Pakistan.
i m happy pakistan has banned indian films . even bollywood should ban pakistani actors in tit for tat policy.
