Lack of security at commercial centres causing anxiety

ISLAMABAD: Despite security concerns in the twin cities, city authorities have failed to install adequate security measures in the busy markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

With Eidul Fitr approaching, influx of shoppers is expected to increase in the commercial centres of the twin cities. Similarly, a large of number of foreigners and diplomats visit various markets of the capital on a daily basis. Under the circumstances, lack of security cameras and other measures are causing anxiety among shoppers.

Apart from threat of more severe attacks, lack of security arrangements also ensure an easy ride for thieves.

Contrary to the claims of Islamabad Police, the occurrence of car thefts has not decreased in the capital.

Salim Chaudhry, who had come for shopping at Super Market in F-6, said, “I am always scared that my car will be lifted. I have to park at my own risk and there aren’t any security cameras or adequate number of guards to ensure the safety of my belongings.”

Moreover, popular shopping areas of Rawalpindi, which include, Saddar, Raja Bazar, Tench Bhatta and Commercial Market, suffer from the same problem. The traders are not satisfied with the tepid attention they are receiving from civic agencies in this regard.

Shaikh Sadiq, President Traders’ Association Rawalpindi, said that a few months ago cameras were installed at Fawara Chowk, but these became non-functional soon after.

“The government and police asked us to install cameras ourselves. The traders are not financially strong. Plus why do we give taxes in the first place?” he added.

Zahid Maqbool, President Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Commerce and Industry, said that they held talks with the administration a few months ago; yet, there was no development from both sides.
