KARACHI: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has decided to include Youth Olympians Syed Kashif Shah and Mohammad Rizwan in the squad for the Holland tour that begins in September.

The PHF, which had earlier decided to include two players from the youth squad, will now choose the squad from the 21 players for the tour where Pakistan will play matches against Belgium, Poland and European club sides.

“We decided to pick the duo for the tour before the Youth Olympic squad went to Singapore,” chief selector Hanif Khan told The Express Tribune. “The selection was based on players’ performances in the Olympics camp.”

Hanif said that the selection committee will send two junior players with the team so that the federation can create a pool of players for the 2012 London Olympics.

“During the selection process, we emphasised on technique and skill of the players because they are naturally fit at this age. The goal was to pick the players who have the potential and the ability to improve quickly in the training tour.”

The Olympian added that the junior team coach Khwaja Junaid recommended defender Kashif and right-half Rizwan along with the centre-forwards Muhammad Umair and Ahmed Zubair. But the selection committee picked Kashif and Rizwan on the basis of their technique and skill.

On the other hand, Junaid welcomed the decision to include the young players in the probables list and said that it proved his success as a coach.
