Karachi factory fire: Rehman Malik posits incident as terror bid

KARACHI: Interior Minister Rehman Malik rejected initial reports on the Karachi factory fire that killed more than 250 and said that terrorism could not be ruled out, Express News reported on Sunday.

While talking to the media during his visit to the site, Malik rejected a boiler blast or generator blaze as the cause of the fire, adding that both were in proper condition.

“Precious lives lost in the factory fire constitutes a national tragedy, the perpetrators will be punished severely,” said Malik, adding that investigations were being conducted from various angles.

Malik also made it clear that those who sealed off the fire exits would not be spared.

He further said that it was being investigated whether the fire was set for claiming insurance, adding that all documents had been taken into possession in this regard.

I do not believe this person, but, it was mentioned that this factory was Walmart Certified, ISO certified no issues relating to payment to suppliers. Now, I agree that these things bear no relation to the mishap but again rumors of the factory being threatened to make monthly or large sum payment to criminal elements cannot be denied. This issue has and is being faced in much greater numbers by factories, industrialists, offices, etc currently in this political climate. All these things do not matter to the people who have lost their parents, siblings and much more in this fire and we as outsiders will never be able to understand the turmoil and emotional vacuum they are going through but in order to find a solution for the future what steps should be taken is the key issue at hand. Honestly, I do not have no trust in the Government Departments or even SITE association which are semi-government organisation who treat people/industrialist who when approach you treat as criminals and threatens to close you down so they can negotiate a good bribe for themselves. Their objective/goal should be guide and train people how to improve their safety standards not scare them. Again, this is all a dream but as they say it no harm in dreaming as in order to fulfill a dream you have to at least have a dream.
