Karachi factory fire: Police seek seizure of factory owners' bank account

KARACHI: Police on Saturday submitted an application to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) for seizing one account of the garment factory owners who are facing murder charges over a fire that killed more than 250 people in their factory, Express News reported.

The account in question, police alleged, has Rs500 million in it and said they were still investigating how many other accounts there were, sources said.

Hospital staff stopped police from arresting one of the factory owners who is under treatment in the hospital for burns received during the factory fire.

The other three owners recorded their statements in the police station after which the DIG and other officers transported them to an undisclosed location.

SSP Investigation Saqib Sultan said good progress had been made in the investigation and they would soon reveal the developments.

Mr. Mirza, I do not think anyone has the right to call the factory owners "greedy". We are no one to call ANYBODY greedy. Also, there is no law that says the government can freeze someone's personal account, and we do not need to worry about the owners disappearing as they can not leave the country anyway. Please also keep in mind that the owners have been honest and transparent throughout this tragedy which was NOT of their making. Obviously, most of these employees have been working loyally since the past 15 years or more which speaks a lot about how "greedy" the owners really are. So, instead of worrying about what's going to happen with the owners bank accounts, we should worry about how ALL OF US can help the families of the victims, since playing the blame game will get us nowhere! :)

This is the first thing that police and govt should do to freeze their account. The victims and their families need one thing and that is money and lots of it as soon as possible. The greedy owners would take the money out and disappear and the poor would be left holding the bag. This money should be used to compensate the sufferings of the families. Nothing would hurt the owners more than their pocket book and no amount of punishment to the owners could cure the hunger and needs of the families of victims.
