Mathira’s Jadugar: ‘It’s only a song’

KARACHI:

You can love her or hate her, but Mathira — the lady who created Pakistan’s first late night show cult –will never stop surprising (or shocking) you with her antics. After shaking a leg with celebrities at the Lux Style Awards (LSAs) in July and hosting shows like “Hum Sab Umeed Sai Hain”, Mathira has now ventured into the music world with her first ever song; a trance number called “Jadugar“.

With 153 dislikes and 28 likes on YouTube, the song is a copy of Akcent’s popular song “My Passion”. The video has Mathira seductively staring into the camera and pouting as she shows off some dance moves — an attempt to mimic Shakira and Beyonce.

While it is too early to speculate whether this song will help her get back in the limelight or not, Mathira is extremely proud of the number. “I think it’s very simple work from the unpredictable Mathira,” she says confidently. “Everything is difficult and you actually have to work hard for it but I would like to thank my sister for supporting me,” she adds.

A question that many of her fans would like to ask is whether she has actually found the prince charming or her “Jadugar” as she puts it. “It’s only a song,” she confesses. “There is no need to get serious about it. There are many more songs in the pipeline and if people start thinking like this then everyone will go nuts,” she adds. “My fans are really cute.”

Lately, Mathira has experimented with dancing and hosting but nothing really seems to have worked out for her like the late night show “Love Indicator”; is our late night show diva running out of tricks? “Darling, I don’t need to justify myself to anyone,” she says assertively. “Things are going great for me. People always have to talk about something or the other, be it the president or the queen,” Mathira quips.

On the contrary, the video of the song itself has come under a lot of criticism as some feel it is vulgar. Provocative content can also be shown in a creative way but sadly, her video doesn’t seem to offer anything more than suggestive dance moves. “This is the perfect example of double standards,” the host-cum-singer says, in response to such comments. “People love watching all sorts of naked women in Pitbull’s videos and consider it cool, but they get possessive when a Pakistani girl does the same with a fully covered body,” she adds. “I made this song for myself so I don’t even care about a single hoot that comes my way,” she says.

As long as future projects are concerned, Mathira says has a box full of surprises but was tight-lipped about most of her work. The diva does however, have a message for her fans, “A big kiss to all my fans, hate me or love me but u all can’t leave me mwaaaaa see you soon with  loads of love from Mathira.”

Infamous: Twitter reaction to “Jadugar”

• lt makes Annie sound good. I think the autotune committed suicide after.

• Ignoring it’s a rip off of “My Passion”, it’s a good listen though would like to hear words better.

• Our very own adult version of Rebecca Black

• The less said the better, it’s a PR exercise nothing more!

• Not a fan at all. She is not an artist and the quality of work shows.
