Ephedrine case: International panel arrives in Pakistan
A two-member delegation of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) arrived here for a five-day visit at the start of the week with an investigation of the ephedrine scam on top of its agenda.
Sources told The Express Tribune that a group of senior officials of the Ministry of Narcotic Control (MoNC) and Foreign Affairs received the INCB panel, headed by Li Unzhou, at the Islamabad International airport. A senior MoNC official said, “We are working on different meetings with the panel during its stay in Pakistan to let it know about the conspired diversion of ephedrine to other countries from Pakistan and what measures are being now taken to check such diversion in the future.”
The visiting delegation held a preliminary meeting will have meetings over the next four days. INCB has expressed concern over the massive diversion of ephedrine from Pakistan to Iran and other countries in recent years.
It raised the issue with the government in the last quarter of 2011.
