Few critics believe the nation will be in for a tricky new series of adventurous politics. Initially, there might be a flash mob of happy optimism and celebrity hernia as toadies emerge from the barf of sycophancy intact. But in actual effect, nothing will really change. We’ll still see the usual clutch of flatterers jockeying for position, fearful and avaricious of success. And the problems will persist. The charade being enacted between the Supreme Court and the beneficiaries of the NRO will continue unabated. Terrorism, whether of the foreign or local brew, symbols of both resurrection and nihilism will further threaten the occasional spells of calm. A religious minority will continue to be decimated in parts of the country. The dollar should strengthen and will probably hit a hundred rupees just before the national elections. The top military brass will persist in driving the most expensive cars. The minorities will keep on living in dread of being accused of committing blasphemy. And Pakistan’s popularly elected leaders will carry on living in Mughal splendour protected by small battalions of heavily armed policemen.
One must not underestimate President Zardari. Remember the way he brought the three so-called ‘secular’ parties into the fold. He also bought over the turncoat PML-Q League and encouraged the way the PTI tsunami swept across the flood walls erected by the PML-Nawaz faction. This brings one to the question of what has happened to the great white hope of the liberal intelligentsia, the once-unstoppable Imran Khan? He is supported by camps of well meaning, sensible men and women in urban centres and in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Unfortunately, many of his supporters in the towns don’t usually visit the ballot box in the firm belief that one lousy vote won’t really make any difference because the same old crooks are destined to come back. However, they are hoping that he is reorganising his panzer divisions for the great putsch, once the date of the national election is announced. Who knows, the nation might be in for a surprise!
While all politicians have their detractors, I find it a little odd that the PTI chief has an usually large share of critics, some of whom have aired their grievances in this newspaper. The most damaging charge against him is that he has strong links with the religious extremists and is being backed by the ISI. They are, of course, allegations spread by the beneficiaries of the NRO. However, as a patriot, he can’t be faulted for criticising the way the Americans, the Jedi masters of the patrician superpowers, are decimating the Pathans in North Waziristan while the army and politicians look the other way.

Mirza dear. I would go further back in history on the concept of NRO or general pardon Religious history reveals two big general pardons one; When we hear the voice of La,tasrib.a first time by prophet Yousuf (sa) when he pardoned his brothers. And second times the voice of la,tasrib,a on a much bigger level at the victory day,ie the Fall of Mecca .by Holy prophet(PUBH).When he gave a general pardon even to his worst enemies. The point is when ever a new journey of Pakistan starts it will start with a General-Pardon. Accountability not for past but for future will be the only honest way to a progressive Pakistan. Regards
If the PPP does come back into power it will certainly not be because of any redeeming qualities it possesses or because of its governance record ........let me leave it at that.
Narrative of "patriotic and honest" intellectuals: All problems of Pakistan started in 1956- the year when AAZ was born. At the top of that, the leader of PPP- -a party that should not have come into being at the first place- married him. Had it not happened, we would not have known what is bribery, kickbacks/grafts and corruption. Ours would have been a land with flowing milk and honey and still under the good governance of some of our beloved Khaki dictators. It wasn't to be and our innocent, patriotic and honest intelligentsia was destined to endure AAZ' corruption and bad governance. Now that there is a threat again of illiterate voters electing corrupt politicians like AAZ we must stop it with the help of our independent judiciary and install government of able technocrats.
A good smokescreen, in a sense that, such theories will give some hope to PPP and Zardari and they won't try to rig the elections (which would be a disaster for the whole country; remember 1977).
I respect Karachi wallah views although may not agree with some of them. I think when we talk about secular parties, we should not forget to mention MQM and its leader who has often said that people in Pakistan should be treated as equal citizens and not categorized as minorities and majority. Also that the name of the country should be changed to Republic of Pakistan and 'Islamic' should be removed. As a secularist, I second such views, although I may disagree with some other agenda of the party. It is not true that the beneficiaries of NRO are playing the religious card against Imran. He supports an agenda which shows softness towards Talibans. That is a fact. Same can be said of ML(N), although it is slightly more critical towards them.
Your article read Anwer Sahib, i little confused, meaning what? Is this what double speak means, praise someone and then at the same time take him or her to the dry cleaners.
Thanks for the article. As I have been saying in ET comments for a long time PPP will return back simply because it is the best organized party and the only pan Pakistan party.
" it is now almost certain that the PPP will return to power. "
What "power" would that be, exactly? As far as I can tell, in Pakistan elected officials hold their office at the pleasure of military leaders and can be removed whenever they find doing so convenient. That is the lesson of the past sixty years so everybody inside and outside Pakistan will have to see a lot more subservience on the part of Pakistani leaders before it is believed the situation has changed.
a dismal n gloomy article . one thing sir , zardari has not proved he is a skillfull politician , he was on shopping and he shopped every politician with our(Pakistan's Exchequer) but let me clear you one thing he can't buy youth and we are against this corrupt system.
Salute to you sir, well written but a little low on hope
So only unpatriotic, NRO beneficaries are critics of Imran Khan? You have written article after article about how things need to change, and how things are more of the same, yet your thinking and attitudes are part and parcel of the status quo. And how about a mention of the non-state actors in North Waziristan who acting independently and beyond the remit of the law? Are they not responsible for decimating pathans?
I wonder why does the author need to call himself a leftist? Titanic figures like Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu initiated Truth and Reconciliation Commission to heal the wounds of accesses of white minority govt who had murdered, enslaved and tortured the black majority. Yet nobody demanded that this commission an NRO of sorts was illegal, immoral or unconstitutional. Those are the progressive, nationalist and leftist leaders not the rightwing party leaders of Pakistan who have close links with JI, and all dubious rightwing mullah and their organizations. In Pakistan under NRO several thousand cases were dropped including multiple murders and terrorism yet some only talk about a couple of cases against the PPP. What is stopping these people to demand the SC to enact all the cases not just a few? If this is not height of dishonesty and double standards then what is? In addition why are these fair minded people not demanding the SC CJ to bring the authors (Gen Mush and Kayani) of NRO to justice? Perhaps like the crown prince Arsalan the generals and PCO judges are also exempt from constitution. On one hand the author laments that Kayani is under the civilian govt and not a rebel on the other he himself admits that the new govt would be PPP also. What is the purpose of spreading hatred against a popular govt then? A leftwing revolution via urban elite because they don't like the decision of silent majority?
