SUKKUR:

Chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that his party is not against the government’s plan to carve out new provinces but the procedure it has adopted is flawed.

Speaking at a press conference at Madrassa Hamadia Manzil Gah, Sukkur, he maintained that under the constitution, such a demand should first arise from the provincial assemblies and then the federal government should step in. But in the case of Punjab the federal government has taken the first step of constituting a committee which is a breach of the constitution, Rehman maintained.

Furthermore, he said that he has a soft corner for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), but whether his party is to make an alliance with them is a separate matter altogether.

The religio-political leader added that whenever the elections take place, the people must make a sound decision about the future government.

He said that the current government has no intentions of fulfilling their promises, which is why he’s parted ways with it. He observed that it is making big decisions outside of parliament, discounting the parliamentary sanctity a government ought to maintain.

Referring to the rift between the judiciary and the government, he said that each institution should operate within its defined sphere. He advised the judges to refrain from issuing statements like politicians and make their verdicts speak louder.

On a question regarding the revival of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), Rehman stated there is no need to revive the grouping because it already exists. He added that efforts are under way to bring Jamaat-e-Islami back to the folds of MMA and a meeting is scheduled in the last week of next month to discuss the issue.

He opposed army operation in the volatile North Waziristan agency, saying his party will stand in solidarity with tribesmen if such an assault was launched.

Rehman proclaimed that he, however, does not ‘see’ an army operation taking place in the area.

He added that the country is facing both internal and external threats. Internally, he said, the nation is plagued with problems like load shedding, inflation, unemployment, lawlessness and terrorism, while externally US forces and its allies are engaged in a war against terrorism in Afghanistan. The aim of the war, according to Rehman, is to destabilise the region.
