JOHANNESBURG:
Clothing brands, art, music and now golf: Nelson Mandela has given his name to a new tournament in South Africa, announced organisers. The Sunshine Tour will stage the Nelson Mandela Championship with the European Tour from December 6 this year. “We are very honoured to have a new tournament on our Tour that is aimed at advancing the work of Nelson Mandela as carried out by the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund,” said Sunshine Tour executive director Selwyn Nathan. “The €1 million, [minimum] 72-hole tournament will be the first event on the 2013 European Tour International Schedule and will also be the kick-off to the 2013 Race to Dubai,” tour organisers said in a statement. A field of 156 professionals drawn from the Sunshine and European tours will compete.
