AQ Khan set to launch own political party

With election fever gripping the politically astute across the country, Dr Abdul Qadir Khan, renowned as the father of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, is all set to launch a nationwide campaign under the banner of Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz Pakistan (TTP). The campaign will be aimed at increasing political awareness amongst the youth in the country.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Dr Khan said, “TTP wants to create political awareness amongst the youth regarding who to vote for and who not to vote for. I will consistently urge youth to elect honest persons in upcoming elections and stand for survival of the country.”

Noting the failure of traditional political parties in delivering on their promises, Dr Khan called a spade a spade by emphasising that his party’s campaign would ask the youth not to vote for traditional parties such as Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Established in July 2012, the TTP has so far gained little political ground among the masses. Political pundits have predicted that while Dr Khan carries enormous respect among the people for his invaluable commitment and service to the country, the TTP is unlikely to gain any significant vote bank or public support.

Dr Khan, who is known to be in contact with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, has demonstrated his preference for emerging political parties such as PTI. His campaign is likely to advocate such platforms as an alternative political choice for the youth.

“Dr Khan’s main objective in launching his political party is to remain in political limelight,” observed senior political analyst Zahid Hussain.

Seemingly inspired by the political rise of his Indian counterpart Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who served as president, political analysts suggest that the TTP would remain a small, insignificant political group such as the Awami Qiadat Party of former army chief General (retd) Mirza Aslam Beg.

“Such initiatives are a product of political ambition and personal whims. It will be an addition to the many rightwing outfits which brood on a false sense of glory,” added political analyst and poet Harris Khalique.

In an attempt to start party organisation Dr  Khan has reportedly held meetings with former army chief Aslam Beg, former prime minister Azad Kashmir Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan, former ministers Ghulam Sarwar Cheema and Malik Ameen Aslam.

Party workers, while talking to The Express Tribune have said that the TTP is unique in so far as it is a guidance movement for patriotic youth, adding that well-known traders across the country, particularly Karachi, have pledged financial support for Dr Khan’s initiative.

The party, which has started its campaign through a Facebook page, has so far drawn 21 supporters. However, party workers are confident that as the party starts opening its provincial offices, the movement will gain momentum among the populace as Dr Khan supports the campaign through public appearances, columns, and television and radio programs.

    Dr. AQ should not waste his time in making a new party. People of Pakistan are not that much educated to support his noble cause. I would advise him to stay away from Politics otherwise this nation would do same what they have done with Ms. Fatima Jinnah. This nation does not deserve good leadership.

    I have my full support for AQ Khans party. Its important that intellectuals and honest people stand as an independent candidate in some hard to reach areas so that feudelism is combatted. This is the only way typical power politics could be defeated.

    @Liberals are unpatriotic:
    I agree with @Liberals are unpatriotic and I have been saying the same in many of my earlier comments. Dr. Khan did not make any money though he enjoyed the power and lavish lifestyle while it lasted. He did a great service for Pakistan by making it nuclear. in my opinion, Pakistan was correct to go nuclear but the unpatriotic Generals proliferated the technology for their personal gains and caused lot of harm for Pakistan. Had they not done so, either Pakistan also would have got nuclear technology from USA and others as India did or both countries would have been denied the technology. In fact, these rogue Generals did a great favor for India. US and others were clearly able to see the difference between Pakistan and India and favored India, may be even as a way to punish Pakistan for its proliferation activities. What advantage Dr. Khan gave to Pakistan, these rogue General took away several times more and brought a permanent disadvantage to Pakistan.

    He certainly isn’t all there in the head choosing a name that has an abbreviation of “TTP” in a country where every single party name is abbreviated 99% of the time. It’s like me founding a group that abbreviates to “KKK” in the US and went into politics. I’d lose 100% of the votes of minorities, anyone who cares about human rights, people who wonder how I didn’t see it coming up as an issue… Pretty much everyone except for hate based groups. All just because I wasn’t smart enough to use a different name, regardless of if I had a fix for every problem or my own actual views. Even if I pointed it out repeatedly, it’d fall of deaf ears.

    “Such initiatives are a product of political ambition and personal whims. It will be an addition to the many rightwing outfits which brood on a false sense of glory,” added political analyst and poet Harris Khalique.

    Who is this analyst Harris Khalique nobody knows about. All such analysis are usually based on his wisdom. What I can tell you for sure is that Dr. AQ Khan’s sole motives are “Tahaffuz Pakistan” and that he has already proved by his devoted hard work.

    Why is he wasting time making his own political party in the name of youth while there exist one “PTI” already. My advice to Dr. AQ khan is to join PTI instead. It took Mr. Imran khan 15 years to get to the stage where he is just now i.e. one man show to the complete show. Dr. AQ khan is 76 (more than the average life expectancy of a Pakistani) now and another 15 years mean he will be about 100 years by the time he is able to make any significant impact on Pakistan political scene. According to the information on the Wikapedia site: , he went to West Berlin to study Metallurgical engineering at the Technical University of Berlin] In 1967, Khan obtained an engineer’s degree (in Technology), an equivalent of Master of Science, from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, and a Doctor of Engineering degree in Metallurgical engineering under the supervision of Martin Brabers from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, in 1972 Khan’s doctoral dissertations were written in fluent German.
    Looks pretty clear.
    None of the institutions above have denied that he is an alma mater. Its a dmocratic country, and if people won’t want him, they won’t vote for him. That’s how democracy works. Afterall, the Reko Diq thing still has not taken off and he hasn’t been able to get himself appointed the CEO/ CTO or Chairman of Reko Diq Development Corp yet.

    To all the star struck fans of the two sainsdans, please remember that you dont have to remind people of your contributions. These two had a small part to play and milked their positions and made claims and that is all that they have ever done. To see where they stand, just look at the water car fiasco. Both claimed it is possible. When academics made noise, both backtracked. This is their true “auqat” and people still treat them like heroes. They are not hearoes but zeroes. Mr AQ khan Wasnt able to guide the youth when Agha Waqar claimed to have invented an illogical water kit. Instead Mr Khan fully supported him. If this so called father of nuclear program couldnt any good in the field he specialises what will he do in politics.

    Ps: AQ Khan is just a metallurgist who has nothing to do with Nuclear physicsRecommend

    @Raj – USA:

    Pleasantly surprised by an honest and fair analysis by an Indian commenter. However, it needs further elaborations. This is my considered opinion that CIA helped Pakistan in its endeavors to get nuclear technology during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The reason was to prove their all out support and give Pakistan confidence to engage Russia in Afghanistan by providing a credible defense against Russian retaliatory invasion. Soon after the Russian withdrawal, it was very clear to Pakistani generals that those who helped them in the nuclear program would come after it, and they were correct in their assessment. Therefore, as a strategic move they decided to divert the focus away and buy enough time that would allow them to establish Pakistan a ‘de facto’ nuclear state and stockpile enough weapons and delivery systems to be easily taken out. This was a matter of national survival rather than personal greed and in my opinion they have successfully achieved this objective. Perhaps you would like to rewrite and change a few adjectives of your narrative as India also helped Pakistan in its efforts by executing ‘Operation Shakti’:Recommend

    AQ Khan is no different than our beloved CJ Ifthekhar Chaudry. Both were brought to the forefront and popularized because they were stamped by our establishment to be controllable and proven to exhibit limited brain function. Its is comedic and shameful that we push aside competent people only because they may challenge authority and question decisions made purely on personal interest. The only good thing about the water kit was that it showed AQ Khan’s true intelligence and understanding of science. I do not want to take away from the fact that he was able to conduct a critical mission for Pakistan to develop the Nuclear Bomb and his skills in espionage are proven, however he had no competence or skill to build the bomb, it was done by people who were never celebrated or presented to the populace of Pakistan. Same is the case of our CJ who was happy to take oath under the PCO while the other SC judges deemed Musharraf’s take over unconstitutional and chose to step aside. Eventually these things will come out in the open and maybe my country Pakistan will survive and be the vibrant society as it once was…….

    But best(for contry as well as him) would have been to keep away from politics.

    “The only fault you can blame AQ Khan would be that he stole the centrifuge technology from Urenco and sacrificed his career and life to make Pakistan a nuclear power. He is a true patriot.”
    What sacrifice he has done for Pakistan.Back in 70s average pay of say,technician, in europe was few hundreds, in dollars, marks etc.With that average sallary one can not even dream of a life that he enjoyed in Pakistan.Which compny or institution in europe offer fresh graduates a job for millions,which this man does’t get tired of his rhetoric of “Kroron ki nokri par laat mar kar”
    Even top exectives couldn’t think of millions(Rs in those days was 5 to 1-dollar) from their jobs.
    How old he was then?.And how does a metallurgist ends up his career? with millions in his banks and top class villas enjoying vip life?.Its not possible.Instead of being thankfull to the nation for giving him much more than what he actually desrerved he left no occasion to remind ‘great favour’ he has done to the nation.Story of making first atomic bomb is much more complex thrilling,adventuring,and heroic but we never heard anyone emerging as single hero or father of atom bomb.Every nuclear power had gone through same phase to get the bomb.None claimed the credit alone.But this happened only in pakistan where hundreds of top class scientists were discredited and sidelined by a deliberate effort.No body cared and accepted what was made to accept.Dilema of nuclear proliferation will haunt pakistan for long time ahead.Is this a favour or dissfavour.?
    It infact is collective effort of 49 differet fields,to make atomic bomb.Enrichment of uranium is one such fields with some of them much more complicated and diificult than uranium enrichment and all fields work under one body we know as atomic energy commision.Why the head of other field didn’t come in the limelight?.

    Dr. A Q Khan instead of making your own political party TTP, Therik Thafuzze Pakistan, you better act as a catalyst for change of system in Pakistan by giving full support to PTI “Imran Khan”. Establishing TTP you will loose all respect among the masses by becoming a controversial figure. Don’t be carried away by emotions. In Pakistan’s political system a King maker will have more say than the King, especially when the King to be is not a son of this soil.
