
The meeting was held with a view to reform and expand the participation of higher education sector in order to improve its contribution to the economic growth and prosperity of the country.
The vice-chancellor briefed the delegation about the ongoing academic, research and extra-curricular activities at the university and the contributions made by the faculty, staff and the students’ communities.
Appreciating the role of Higher Education Commission (HEC), Dr Kamran said that HEC funding had helped increase varsity faculty participation in international conferences and access to research journals, leading to significant improvement in research output.
The present administration of the university, he said, raised the research funding from the previous Rs4 million to Rs50 million while endeavouring to raise the number of PhD faculty up to 80 per cent of the current teachers’ strength.
The VC said that during 2008 and 2009, the university produced 106 and 126 PhD scholars respectively against the annual average production of 41 PhDs during the 18 years before that.
“Presently 1,000 varsity teachers for PhD while 1,036 students for MPhil leading to PhD have been enrolled in the university,” he added.
The World Bank delegation took a round of the various departments and colleges of the varsity later.
