The 37-year-old replaces another former fast bowler, Aaqib Javed, who left the job in March this year to take up a coaching assignment in the United Arab Emirates.
"We have appointed Akram as our bowling coach for a period of one year after shortlisting two candidates," Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) director international cricket Intikhab Alam told media.
Alam was one of three members of a coaching committee that was assigned to find a suitable candidate to replace Javed.
England's Stuart Barnes was also among the candidates but was not available for the limited overs series against Australia, starting in United Arab Emirates from August 28.
"Akram will join the squad in the UAE for the series against Australia," Alam said.
Akram brings rich experience as a bowler, having played nine Tests and 23 one-day for Pakistan between 1995-2001 and also represented Northamptonshire, Essex, Sussex and Surrey on the English county circuit.
Pakistan had appointed former Australian batsman Dav Whatmore as their head coach in March this year after Waqar Younis left the post in September last year.
Pakistan's 1-0 defeat away to Sri Lanka in July ended an unbeaten run of seven Test series stretching back to their infamous 2010 tour of England, which was marred by a spot-fixing scandal.
The streak included a 3-0 Test whitewash of then world number one England earlier this year in the UAE.

He has the most important prerequisite to become the coach of the Pakistani team, PURCHEE.
Better than any Indian Fast Bowler actually...
Better than Shoaib Akhtar...
very bad decision taken by PCB... Because when Mohsin hasan Khan was coach of Paksitan PCB changed and said we will appoint foriegn batting coach , now they are appointing a Pakistani bowling coach which has not a very good record in international cricket.. now where PCB chairman...? they expelled mohsin hasan khan who was brilliant coach for Pakistan, but now they are appointing coach like Muhammad Akram...... i think this should not happen... PCB should review their decision... Muhammad Saad Suhail
Akram has a lot of English county experience....I think Shoib technical would have been better...but as a teacher Akram would be better.
to all people who started bashing m. Akram let me tell you that coaching is a skill you don't have to be past great to be successful coach, you have to be trained and have knowlege of your job to groom others so let's give me some time before making any statements. Peace!
Didn't this guy get banned at one stage for match fixing?
Jaipal, I think you're confusing him with Wasim Akram!
Lets see if he can improve ailing fast bowler department of Team Pakistan. I liked him for his economic bowling spells. Something which he can teach M. Sami.
I'm wondering when the PCB will start taking cricket seriously?
I think its better to make UMER GUL coach of team instead Mr.Mohammad Akram because UMER IS MORE EXPERIANCE THEM HIM IN TEST, ODI's ND T2O.
a very wtse decision/ also appoint a batting coach. preferably an indian.similiarly india should appoint a pakistani coach.both teams should appoint jonty rods as fielding coach jointly.
