TV time: 8 injured as inmates clash in Haripur Jail

At least eight jail inmates were injured when a group of prisoners detained on terrorism charges attacked them in Haripur Jail on Monday, police and jail sources.


Station House Officer Muhammad Bashir quoted Jail Superintendent Masoodur Rehman as saying that the inmates of Barrack No 4 were watching TV when some prisoners tried to switch it off, but the former resisted the move. Annoyed, the inmates called their companions from other barracks, who attacked the eight inmates with fists, kicks and clubs and injured them seriously.

The jail administration got to the scene blowing whistles and siren. The police overpowered the 11 attackers and arrested them under sections 337-L, 148 and 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

They were also locked in solitary confinement cells for violating jail rules and committing the crime during detention.

The injured were taken to the jail hospital where they were admitted. However, no serious injuries have been reported. Four of the injured were identified as Naeem, Rabnawaz, Arshad and Fiaz.

Meanwhile those booked on charges of attacking them were: Aziz Khan, Hameedullah, Muhammad Waheed, Omarzeb, Zainul Abideen, Fiaz Ahmed, Saeed Ahmed, Nek Zaman, Buland Khan, Ehjazul Haq and Ghulam Rasul.
