The mostly Chinese audience erupted in cheers when it was announced that the home candidate, Yu Wenxia, had been awarded the title.
Explaining during the final why she should win the Miss World title, Yu said: "When I was young I felt very lucky because so many people helped me, and I hope in the future I can help more children to feel lucky."
Last year's Miss World -- Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela -- handed over her crown in the futuristic Dongsheng stadium in the northeastern city of Ordos.
A total of 116 contestants, the highest number ever, took to the stage during the contest, watched annually by about a billion people around the globe.
Ordos, around 700 kilometres (440 miles) from the nearest beach, is an unusual venue for the world's biggest beauty pageant.
Besides the traditional swimsuits and evening gowns, participants also donned outlandish costumes, with some dressed as belly dancers.
The beauty queens have been in China rehearsing for nearly a month, soaking up traditional Mongolian culture by churning yoghurt in a nomad's yurt and donning local attire to climb a sand dune.
The city, which has a vast town square dedicated to the mighty Mongolian warrior Genghis Khan, has grown rich over the last decade on the back of a coal mining boom that has transformed it from a sandstorm-afflicted backwater into one of the wealthiest places in China.
The boom triggered a frenzy of building in the city, but the local government has been unable to fill the vast tower blocks that have sprung up, earning it the title of China's biggest ghost town.
Enthusiastic competitors seemed unfazed, expressing optimism that with the help of the pageant, the city could leave that reputation behind and take its place alongside other global centres of glitz and glamour.
"Ordos could be the next Dubai," said Marielle Wilkie, representing the Caribbean nation of Barbados.
Albanian contestant Floriana Garo chimed in with her own bold prediction.
"In ten years, this city will be booming," she said.
Architecture in Ordos -- where the city museum is shaped like an undulating blob -- is "world class", added Markysa O'Loughlin, representing St. Kitts and Nevis, also in the Caribbean.
Bookmakers had tipped Miss Mexico, 20-year-old Mariana Reynoso, for the crown, but Miss China was also seen as a leading contender along with Miss Nepal.
While the popularity of the contest, first held in 1951, has waned in the West, continued interest in Asian countries ensures that the final rakes in a huge global television audience.
Sweden's Kiki Hakansson was the first Miss World, while Oscar-winning US actress Halle Berry was a finalist in 1986 and Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai took the crown in 1994.
Venezuela has produced the most Miss Worlds, with six winners, while India and Britain claim five titles each.
China has already hosted the competition five times, most recently in 2010 on the tropical southern island of Hainan.

Ms.China seems graceful and nice. It's not always about looks or being hot. That's definitely not the main point of miss world. Plus, why is it that who comes first or second or third SOOOO important?. Can't we all just have fun watching these beautiful girls trying to make the world a better place and not make everything into an unhealthy competition. It's really the gossipers and haters, who are negative about everything, who has to change. cause thats exactly the kind of negative attitude thats ruining the planet.
Ms China say "Good morning..." ahaha it was a night event. She murmurs the theme song at the end of the show...wonder how is she gonna travel around de world helping the unfortunate. Doesnt seem to fit the purpose of ms world at all.
@Kaye: and she looks friendly
wow, unbelievable... how come china be MW 12,she doesn't deserve the crown...believe she look innocent but wales or australia is even more beautiful.china is not that special.THAT WAS VERY VERY DISAPPOINTING BUT NOW ITS TOO LATE TO JUDGE!
@Sharon: I find it funny that a few people wrote she does not deserve Miss World because she did not answer in English. Let's say if France hosted Miss World Contest 2012, and Miss France answered in French a question asked by the host in English, to please her fellow countrymen and to win the popularity votes, would the same people make the same comment? How about if Miss Ivory Coast and Miss Belgium also answered English questions in French because they wanted to show respect to the host country and audience. Oh, and Miss Switzerland could have answered in English, but she too decided to answer in French since she is fluent in several languages and she knew the majority of audience there were French-speaking. Would the same people have such resentment? English is not the only language in the world. It is most popular simply because it is the easiest to learn. I could attest to that because I'm trilingual. Went to an International High School where diplomats all over the world put their kids and attended Harvard where the brighest minds around the world exchanged ideas. My friends around the world all agree that English is the easiest language to learn, but that does not negate the beauty of many other languages. I did not watch Miss World 2012. However, I'm not at all surprised if the result was political. It is well known that beauty pagent contests, local or international, have been influenced by politics and business. 2012 may not be exception. Plus beauty is in the eyes of the beholders. Have some respect for other countries and other languages!!
A few years ago, another contestant from China won, it
s because they held the pageant even if her she didn
t give the best answer – it happened again! We clearly heard the other contestants, and Ms. South Sudan
s answer was the best so far. To those who organize this beauty pageant... Please show to your viewers what Miss World truly means! BEAUTY, BUT ABOVE ALL BRAIN!.ms south sudan hit it but ms china snatch it.
@gp65: Thanks buddy.
Miss South Sudan deserves to win the Miss World Title. Among the candidates, she had the strongest answer.
@nitish: LAra Dutta was a Miss Universe winner just like Sushmita. The other 4 you stated won during 1994 to 2000. The first Miss WOrld from India was in 1965 or 66 calle Rita Faria.
One of the bigest favorites, Colombia, didnt make it to the 15 semi, mexico with the highest scores, didnt get to the final cut and China the 2 times that has won the title it has been on its soil......Hmmm... This was Miss Unbelievable 2012
Made in china
i do not know china won! because her voice was very very bad and awful
totally undeserved.. I disregard her answering in chinese yet her answer was so plain and simple.. It didnt even touched my heart unlike miss india south sudan and jamaica.. Nothings special about her.. I dont hate her.. Its not her fault why she won.. But its really dissappointing..
I don't watch pageants. They are sexist and outdated. That said I'm glad an Oriental finally one. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, etc, etc rarely win in competitions that favor a western beauty ideal.
Congrats! Good luck!
So what if she doesn't speak English.
Shame of MW ORG ..india ws mst dserving and bet she is real miss world...judges are just fake
Congrats to Miss World and Miss China to have earned it.
@Tee: Pls dont watch it again. Was there not any indian judge on the bench. Poor indian girl , she missed it,
FIJI Is Queen in the Pacific deserved some recognition, at least 3rd spot!!
I totally agree with you, @Sharon:
This is just my opinion, for me, it must be Miss Australia or Miss Jamaica who must win the crown for Miss World 2012. These lovely ladies showed intelligence in their answers. I think most judges were impressed on the answer of Miss China. There must a reason why they chose Miss China to win. I am wondering why. Haha.
congratulation to miss world 2012.well deserved.
@Tee: Some of the winners r AISHWARYA RAI,SUSHMITA SEN,PRIYANKA CHOPRA,LARA DUTTA,YUKTA MUKHI,DYANA HADEN.They bagged the award in late 90s.That much i know.I read that the first miss world(i could not recall the name) from india was in and around late 70s when india was one of teh povert nation with no economy. She could not even manage a good sandal for herself while going for the competition. And there she won and counting started.A time was there when india won miss world title consecutively.Controversy arose and judges were accused of exploiting indian girls. So very next year celina jetely was not awarded for the same citing controversy.later one of the judge admitted that she was most deserving.Obviously they r very successful in bollywood and a direct ticket to bollywood for them. One more fact ,they all r hindus.
China hosted the Miss World twice and guess who the winners were ?????
Ms China is not even hot not even spicy.. Just a plain face covered with all cosmetics, didnt even like her smile.. Ms Australia was a better option..
Total farce. Clearly all " beauty " contests are businesses first.
She deserves to win. Chinese girls are beautiful, its high time the world accepts that China can also have world class looking women
As far as English is concerned, its not a national language of China, so why should she speak it?
Typical Chinese approach. I remember China-Thai kick boxing matches held in China. The Chinese guy with a swollen face and bleeding eye would be declared the winner and the Thai who did all the damage would gasp with his mouth and eyes wide open!!
This is the most disgraceful Miss World final Judging I have ever seen in my life. You can tell from the Miss World CEO voice, hesitation and nervousness w...See More what a pity they didn't give the best in talent award to miss Viet Nam after all the worldwide attention and the designers Hoang My if she was supposed to be in the top 7, man china will eat dirt in the q&A, but well it has been planed a long time ago for CHINA to win again after staging the contest for less than a decade...they gave the talent to china so that it won't look like she was a mediocre candidate.
very disappointed wid d results i ws hopin for australia, brazil ,mexico or india becuz miss australia bagged so many events n so did miss india n den out of nowhere cokes out miss china to rule d crown hu cnt evn speak english..sure has so muh brainS-.- n i disagree not all beauty queens make it bi in bollywood no one except priyanka chopra n aishwarya rain made it big .
why china? she is not worth,,
This competition is a joke in all aspects .. Learn to respect women instead of organizing such lame events
Yuck! china doesnt deserv dat crown, mexico or kenya deservd it....
what a shame! All the other four left ladies were deserved to win the Miss World, except for the Chinese. Definitely, there is something suspiciously behind the competition as every one could see that the Chinese lady did not seem to be surprised! On the whole, this competition was not satisfactory for the viewers at all and I hope there would not be such a shame for the next Miss World, otherwise there would not be any enthusiastic viewers for this competition.
It was absolutely ridiculous if i may call it. Miss S.sudan should have carried the day. Look here,,mis China isn't even able to express herself! Talk of communism.
yeah, okay, a lot of haters here. I agree she's nothing special, but why are you linking this thing to politic since you guys obviously despise such action? And linking it to the Olympic too? really? Hence should we question all the medals that the British have received in 2012 Olympic? If you want to talk about the beauty contest, stay in the goddamn topic! Stop degrading other people so you can feel superior about yourself. And this comment specifically goes to the American girl who commented on letting Miss Sudan win the contest because they were such a struggling country. it's not a game of charity or empathy, Miss Sudan and her 'country' probably doesn't even need it and the way you say it shows how "good" you guys feel about yourself. But it's not true and you know it, why else would you relate a superficial beauty contest to politic in such a SOUR tone?! Plus, nobody really cares if you and your friend in the U.S think one way or another. Accept the fact or ignore it if you like, but don't be sour since you're really making yourself look silly. BTW, you should bash the original MIss World Commitee about what you're suspecting...after all, even if there were money involved, guess where it went to?
Southern sudan dservd it.why not crown an african 4 once.i blve they are the true en the mst beautiful women in the world
Why china???????????
she does not deserve this!
Interesting...didn't know India has won several Miss Worlds and too funny that they become Bollywood queens. I hear you...enough of that!!
Love the headline, nicely done ET ;-) Also, lots of love to Ms. Australia....she's very attractive!
"this time for Asian. happy to know this result." why that? im not agree with u, im an Asian but im not beside China@sodepp:
Totally un deserved she cant even speak English to represent the world totally un fair and she wasn't even leading through any of the events
@Tee: This Miss World and Miss Universe are just tools by the cosmetic companies to sell their products in the countries In late 1990s,most of the beauties were from India. In early 2000s,they targetted Latin America Now they're targetting Africa and East Asia
She was not excited at all..in comparison with miss world 2011 at least!!!! she does not deserve this!
Miss Australia <3
she was awful, why her? why not mexico or welts or india?
this time for Asian. happy to know this result.
Awesome
Very good!!!!!
What a shame !! Blame on you. This is the most ridiculous event i have ever witnessed
China PR as the winner for Miss World is completely UN-DESERVED. She wasn't even leading in anything throughout the competition and she spoke in her native language in her answer to why she should be Miss World while EVERYONE ELSE spoke in English. That in itself was disrespectful. And let's face it, compared to the other ladies she isn't doing anything special.
South Sudan and India are truly the beauties with purpose!!! -- which I thought was the purpose of Miss World. I will NEVER watch this competition again.
