Corruption charges: NAB raids Islamic varsity, seizes transport record

ISLAMABAD:

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday raided Islamic International University’s (IIUI) transport department and seized records of the past 20 years for initiating an inquiry.

Sources said a NAB team questioned IIUI officials including acting president Sahibzada Sajidur Rehman, following complaints of irregularities.

IIUI has one of the largest transport fleet and millions of funds are channelled to the transport department. Sources said Rehman requested his brother-in-law Senator Raja Zafarul Haq to talk to NAB high-ups. When contacted, Sahibzada admitted that NAB officials had checked the records of the transport department. He said, however, that some university officials had maligned the institute by feeding the wrong information to the media.

A senior official of NAB who requested anonymity said they had received information about organised corruption in the transport department. There was corruption in fuel consumption, purchase of buses and repairs of vehicles.

The official added that the relevant records were secretly held by senior transport officer, which were seized on information provided by a lower grade official.

"organised corruption" and "the relevant records were secretly held by senior transport officer"... IIUI is a prime example of corruption, napotism and favoritism. If the NAB conducts a thorough investigation and audit of all its departments thorough irregularities would be found everywhere including appointments, promotions, foreign trips and banquets on univ money. Incompetent and corrupt academicians and administration officials are promoted whereas the competent researchers, administrators and workers are discouraged. This is all done on the basis of favoritism and cronism ignoring all the principles of merit and transparency. But most of the affectees don't complain anyone risking their jobs...
