Heading a three-judge bench of the apex court, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard a suo motu case regarding obscenity on television channels, following a written complaint made by Justice (Retd) Wajihuddin Ahmed and the former chief of Jamaat-e-Islami, Qazi Hussain Ahmed.
The court has given Pemra four weeks to complete the process and has directed cable operators and TV owners to submit compliance reports.
Appearing on notice, acting Chairman of Pemra, Dr Abdul Jabbar, assured the court that action will be taken to discourage obscenity on TV channels in accordance with its directives.
According to Jabbar, most of the complaints were against obscenity on compact disc channels showing Indian movies. He told the court that Pemra had fined TV channels spreading sectarianism and had issued notices to cable operators and TV channels for running advertisements and programmes containing obscenity.
The chief justice observed that effective measures should be taken on an urgent basis, directing the Pemra chairman to consult with Qazi Hussain Ahmed for developing a strategy in this regard.
Justice Jawad S Khawaja observed that a proper definition of immoral programmes and advertisements should be established.
The acting chairman, however, told the court that Pemra wants to hold a discussion with all stakeholders in order to set parameters for discouraging programmes and advertisements showing obscenity on TV channels.

Besides pathetic Indian content, movies like 'Hostel' and 'SAW" are being shown on TV. Would you let your children watch these? There is no control mechanism on the TV channels being shown. Would you let your child be influenced by cheap advertisement tactics which include ridiculing teachers, parents and grand parents. This practice needs to be stopped, I remember an ad where a bunch of school students laugh at the teacher falling down after being slipped.
Good God, the CJ seems to have completely lost the plot. The CJ should hear cases of people whose life and properties are at stake. This is such nonsense. Well, this is Pakistan anyways, where common sense, reason and logic are severely lacking.
Why CJ has to take action, why PEMRA has not taken notice of this before court has to interfer.
CJI of pakistan himself seems to be a mullah. I wont be surprised if he starts issueing arrest warrants for Veena Mallik and other artists for working in Indian movies.
This is Gen Zia's worst reincarnation. Get a life, change the channel or better only watch and subscribe a certain number of channels. The country has more serious problems than changing the channels. In fact make sure there are no new power plants to silence the TV.

I appreciate all that SC/CJ are doing. But seriously, right now Pakistan's biggest enemies are the corrupt politicians and all the power and law & order crisis. Put an end to Zardari's regime, improve the electricity situation so our GDP start rising again and then get to other tasks SC.

This should have been done by PEMRA long time back. Its so disgusting the people using filthy language against the institutions and still they are on air. They must be banned.

Never a shortage of people trying to manage your morals --- one would think that Pakistan SC has bigger fish to fry than trying to micro manage obscenity complaints.
I think there is no need to DEFINE it again. It is very much clear. We are all muslims and we all should be very clear in our minds regarding our religious and cultural values. the verdict is not just enough. A lot is needed to be done to stop MEDIA nonsense..!
