ISLAMABAD:

A housekeeper at a five-star hotel was sent on a two-day physical remand on Thursday after being arrested for stealing money from the hotel’s lockers.

According to the Secretariat police, the suspect, Umer Shehzad, was arrested for stealing Rs65,000, $1,600, 70 Euros and 500 Saudi Riyals from Marriott Hotel.

They said Shehzad was a housekeeper at an executive reception and the locker was for the guests to keep their cash and valuables. The incident came to light after the cashiers’ shift changed and the cash present in the locker was found to be less than the registered amount in the record.

After internal investigations, the management found Shehzad to be the last person leaving the reception, following which a case was registered.

The police said the suspect has confessed to have committed the theft during preliminary investigations. The police have recovered the local currency from his possession, while he has revealed that the remaining amount is hidden in his apartment in Dhoke Kala Khan. The police added that the suspect will be sent to jail once the remaining currency is obtained.
