Eight-time champions India have lost all four of their preliminary round matches in London and are in danger of finishing last in the 12-team tournament.
The national mood has not been improved by seeing Pakistan move to the brink of qualifying for the semi-finals.
India's 4-1 defeat to South Korea on Sunday left them with a record of six goals scored against 15 conceded and sitting rock bottom of Group B.
"It's tough, because there is an expectation of your senior players. You don't get many chances like this in a lifetime," said Nobbs.
"You have to give it everything you possibly can, because it's not often you get to play for your country and at the Olympic games."
"There's no excuses. There's nothing more we can do as coaches, we're not out there on the field. The players have to perform, and they have been performing throughout the year.
"They've let themselves down, they've let us down, and they've let the Indian people down too, and I apologise for that because it's something we've got to fix. What's coming is a lot of hard work and a lot of pain."
Meanwhile, Pakistan, the three-time champions, find themselves on the verge of a semi-final place in Group A, although they face a tough task if they are to get through to Thursday's knockout round.
Pakistan, gold medallists in 1960, 1968 and 1984, stepped back into contention with a nail-biting 5-4 win over South Africa.
It took their points tally to seven from four matches - one behind World Cup winners Australia and Great Britain.
On Tuesday, Pakistan tackle Australia while Spain, the Beijing 2008 silver medallists who also have seven points, face the hosts.
Both Australia and Britain are unbeaten in the tournament.
"Australia are one of the best sides here. We cannot make any mistakes in that match," said Pakistan coach Akhtar Chaudhry.
"We have to play very carefully and if my forwards move like they did against South Africa, it will be a very good match."
Two goals in the last 10 minutes saved Pakistan's chances of making the semi-finals in Sunday's win over South Africa, the tournament's highest-scoring match so far.
Captain Sohail Abbas made it 4-4 in the 64th minute with a trademark penalty corner flick into the top corner before Waseem Ahmad claimed Pakistan's winner three minutes later.
"It's do-or-die game against Australia but our spirits are very high," said Pakistan star Rehan Butt.

india 1 silver 3 bronze pakistan 000
Inferiority complex of Pakistanis...
Mary kom winning medal is not a news, But indian hockey losing is a news...
I guess the only way pakistanis can feel good about themselves is by finding flaws or problems in India..
@Ballu
You do realise where your equivalent China is on the medals table do you?, so stop taking so much pride in winning 3 medals from a nation of over 1.2 Billion people. However congratz to those who did win medals, I'll take nothing away from u.
@Vishnu Dutta: But I still remember the times when my uncles used to take casual leaves from office to watch a hockey game in doordarshan and used to chide our generation for prefering a boring game called cricket where a person as fat as David Boon is a star... I do agree that India is slowly developing sports other than hockey, but how many of you will watch a game of discus throw, javelin, shooting on tv or go to a stadium unless its Olympics,CWG or Asian games???
Hockey is a team game and if properly developed could become one of the watched games among masses like cricket and football...
I agree with some above statements, we should give less importance to hockey and give more preference to Archery, Shooting and Boxing. Also athletics. Above all, we should invest most in education and developing scientific temper. Ashoke Sen won a huge award and there is hardly any mention of this. His contribution to String theory is much more than all the olympic medals won by all the countries put together till now. There is a picture of him receiving an award from Dr. Salam's institute in 1989. I am surprised hardly anyone knows about his contribution (including me).
Hockey takes up a lot of our resources and it is a dying game in the world. after cricket takes up most amount of funding. we should just stop playing hocky and invest in something we are good at. i.e. boxing, wrestling, shooting and kabaddi. Three of the above games makes up to over 100 medals, if we divert our hockey resources to those games then we might win many more medals. we have dominated the world in the past in hockey, we have been there and done it, now lets move on to new frontiers
@S By that logic Allah is more meherbaan on drone using and innocent killing America, because see its tally in every Olympics. For Allah sake don't bring HIM in everything.
@Ravi: You started talking about guts while you r on the verge of coming back empty handed once again.yes we analyse ourselves rather being in denial mode. Our players let us down and we r ashamed of it.Pakistan is playing well and have best of luck. But there is no reason for the pakistan to be happy on this issue.Regarding bollywood, you dont have guts and dedication either to own bollywood. Its not a childs game buddy.Do you have any idea about how much is the yearly expenditure of bollywood .I m sureYour economy cannot afford it.So stop dreaming and watch what we avail you and enjoy.
@123: we are different now and will remain so, in the forseeble future.
just tell me, if ALLAH is just, would he award the gold medal to a believer who does namaq 5 times, or to one who toils hard for years to bring recognition and pride to his people?
One cannot compare India and Pakistan in this Olympics. Both are in different pools, playing different countries. Yes i agree India fared badly playing in her pool.
@unbeliever:
I beg to differ. May Allah guide you! Peace!
Dont be sorry everybody knows its not Bollywood. it take guts in reals life while in reel life just few cuts.
1silver in shooting 1bronze in badminton 1bronze in shooting *1bronze in boxing(mary komm can easily win gold in finals in two days) and 4potential medals more... Not to forget, we won india sri lanka ODI series by 4-1, so sir, we got plenty of reason to party. And pakistan? The same pakistan, which didnt even won a single olympics medal since past 20yrs. So you can pull our legs as much as you want...
@ anonymous.. this would have been the joke of the last century. India & Indians today are only concerned with medals ie olympics & asian games, and are putting in a lot effort to be a relevant sporting country by 2020. Also, Cricket & Hockey are going to be irrelevant sports in India very soon and nobody will bother about India Pak contest in these two sports.
Also, Pakistan hockey team will get thrashed by Australia tomorrow and all medal hopes for Pakistan will vanish with that. Atleast, India has won some medals in other disciplines and will get a few more with some luck.
All the best Pakistan.
@S: you do not win by ALLAH's help or loose because he curses you, but solely because of you hard work or the lack of it.
@Anonymous: yes, we lost....but you are saying as if you are winner in all those above mentioned categories...
what roy is suggesting is ridiculous to say the least....you play a game not to simply win a medal, but because you love it too.....
Go Green, May ALLAH help you!
I really fail to understand why this waste of time and resources on a game like hockey where there are only two golds possible(mens & wemens). It would be much better to focus on other disciplines like boxing, shooting, wrestling, archery and wieghtlifting where there are so many more medals to be won and India has a real chance in these sports.
Simply LOVE IT!!!!!
