MULTAN:
Two Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) officials suffered severe injuries in an assault on Saturday night allegedly by men stealing electricity to run a tube-well in Chak 169/10-R.
An FIR registered in the matter said the illegal connection was later disconnected by four other officials accompanied by Saddar police. These officials had fled the scene and avoided thrashing at the hands of the suspects, two of whom were identified as Rana Abdul Ghaffar and Rana Gulzar.
The injured Mepco officials were identified as Line Superintendent Farrukh Naseer, and the sub-divisional officer Sana Ullah Zafar.
They were taken to Khanewal district headquarters (DHQ) hospital where doctors described the condition of one of them as critical. Medical Superintendent Dr Muhammad Ashraf said SDO Zafar had suffered an injury to his head and was yet to regain consciousness. He said Zafar would be observed for the next three to four days.
The medical superintendent said the other official, line superintendent Naseer, had been hit in the back with an iron rod which had left both his legs paralysed. He said Naseer had also suffered fractures in one of his arms and broken a jaw. Talking to The Tribune, Naseer said they were detained and beaten up by the assailants at a room near the tubewell in Chak 169/10-R.
He said the raid was carried out following a complaint by an anonymous caller. He said the caller had claimed that several people in the village were stealing electricity to run their tubewells.
District Police Officer Rai Ijaz said a police team had raided the area but none of the suspects was found there. He said two teams had been formed to track down the suspects.
The FIR registered against them mentions sections of the Pakistan Penal Code on power theft, attempt to murder and interference in government officials’ duties. The DPO said more sections could be added to the case once the medical report became available.
