FAISALABAD: University of Agriculture (UAF) Vice Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan said on Tuesday that the UAF was the first university in Pakistan offering a degree programme in human nutrition and dietetics. Speaking to participants of a farewell party for National Institute of Food Science and Technology graduates and the annual meeting of the Pakistan Society of Food Scientists and Technologists, Khan said the programme aimed at providing workers for hospitals, health institutions and the food department. He said that multinational investment and a growing fast food sector provided new opportunities for nutrition and dietetics graduates. “The federal government has renamed the ministry of agriculture as Ministry of Food Security. This will open new opportunities for graduates,” Dr Khan said. He said that the University of Agriculture was working on collaboration with international food organisations. Earlier, Pakistan Society of Food Scientists and Technologists President Professor Dr Faqir Muhammad Anjum said the government had set up a new food authority after a seven-years campaign. He said around 30 University of Agriculture graduates had been inducted in the newly-established food authority. He hoped that some more graduates will get jobs in the food authorities set up by provincial governments soon. Anjum said the government has established a Halal Food Research and Development Cell. Professor Dr Muhammad Aslam Pervaiz and Dr Sarfaraz also spoke on the occasion.
