FAISALABAD:

Explosives planted near a borstal jail and a Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) office on Friday were defused in a joint operation by Rescue 1122, Civil Defence and police officials.

The explosive substances, hidden in six bags in a vacant plot in Khurarianwala area, were later sent to a laboratory for examination. SSP (Operations) Sadiq Dogar, in charge of the operation, told the media that an inquiry had been initiated into the matter. He said the initial inspection by the Civil Defence team suggested that the explosives could have posed severe damage to buildings in the surroundings. He added that the borstal jail and the CIA centre appeared to be the targets. The explosives were spotted by a passerby who reported the matter to the Rescue 1122. Rescue 1122 officials later called Civil Defence and police teams to the spot.

Borstal Jail Superintendent Azhar Khan told The Express Tribune that more than 160 juvenile prisoners were held at the facility.
