A 12-member parliamentary committee, headed by federal minister Syed Khurshid Shah, had reached consensus on Ebrahim’s name out of six nominees as the head of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Ebrahim was one of the three names nominated by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Justice (retd) Nasim Sikander and acting CEC Justice Shakirullah Jan were the other two nominated by the party.
Ebrahim also served as the interim law minister from 18 July 1993 until 19 October 1993 and interim justice minister from 5 November 1996 until 17 February 1997.
He served as the Governor of Sindh from 19 April 1989 to 6 August 1990.

Mr. Usman Khan, its in one sense victory fro PML N but F.Ibrahim was PTI nominee also plus if 20th Amendement is credit to PML N then they should have agreed on CEC within a week of the amendment why waste so much time. Credit also goes to PPP for this, they could have delayed it a lot. What Imran Khan said is conflict of interest. Remember when Punjab Govt was removed through Governer rule, on ly then PML N cam back with full lion force and helped restore the judiciary. I think in this case if PML N again comes as wounded lion by resigning and joining PTI and JI the force would be formidable rather than one foot in Govt, One foot in opposition., Imran Khan's idea is not doomed at all.
@Mirza, of course this is moral victory for PMLN, caz that was the only reason under 20th amendment they tend to stay in assemblies...1st independent CEC, 2nd independent caretaker set-up...
So the logic of Imran Khan to ask from PMLN to resign from assemblies is doomed...
Yes, agreed this is victory for democracy, but there is lot more credit to PMLN than anyone else...
@3footninja: You still have doubts that how smart is Zardari? He is making every dance on his tone and kept the collation govt going for 4 years and exposed Mullahs strength in everyone, if this is not the level of political smartness and maturity then please you explain it to us!
@Raza Khan: i love your sarcasm!
This shows that decision of Nawaz Sharif was right to stay in assemblies...
Had PMLN follow Imran khan advise to resign from assemblies, Justcie (R) Hammed Dogar could have been CEC today...
Don't waste time & vote with Imran, his purpose is just to target PMLN on the wishes of establishment to divide the vote bank of PMLN, which will give in-direct support to PPP/ANP/PMLQ & MQM electoral alliance...
A bad news for Imran Khan. In the presence of a neutral empire and two very experienced batsmen at the crease, the only choice he got is to boycott the match.
Oh thank you Mr. Nawaz Sharif for putting forward the name of Justice (retd.) FGE ... you are the only true ray of light in the otherwise grim darkness that envelopes this country (as the PML-N trolls would say...)
Excellent decision! This shows that Asif Zardari is for fair elections. History in the making for Pakistan. AAZ has truly matured as a good politician.
Another step in the right direction for strengthening the process of institution building in Pakistan.
Jeay Bhutto!
A foot in the door to real democracy.
Good choice, but will he have the strength to implement Election rules?
I hope the appointment of Fakhruddin G Ebrahim as new CEC will prove a foot in the door of real democracy.
It would be a challenge for a man of 85 years to do the job
