Pakistan thrash Chile 15-1 in Youth Olympics

Pakistan continued its winning ways in the Youth Olympics Games as it thrashed Chile 15-1 in its second hockey match.

SINGAPORE: Pakistan continued its winning ways in the Youth Olympics Games as it thrashed Chile 15-1 in its second hockey match of the event. The team’s win was aided by spectacular performances by Muhammad Suleman, Muhammad Arslan Qadir and Syed Kashif Shah who scored a hat-trick each.

The first half of the match saw Pakistan starting with a bang and lead 5-0 at the interval. Suleman stunned the crowd after scoring five field goals in the 25th, 27th, 38th, 45th and 47th minute, followed by Arslan who scored four goals in the 17th, 49th, 64th and 67th minute.

Team captain Syed Kashif Shah who scored three goals in the eighth, 55th and 58th minute. Zubair Ahmad, Muhammad Rizwan and Muhammad Umair scored one goal each as Pakistan completed a formidable rout.

Chile only managed to score a single goal - on a penalty stroke - by Vincent Martin in the 66th minute.

Pakistan will play its third match against Singapore on Friday after having beaten Ghana 6-3 in their opening match on Tuesday.

Pakistan’s Taekwondo hope ended

Pakistan’s hopes in the Taekwondo discipline came to an end as Maham Aftab succumbed to Jordanian Dana Touran in the women’s 49-kilogramme quarter-finals.

The hosts had more success in the discipline, as Abdul Rahman Shafinas became the first female athlete from Singapore to win a medal after winning a bronze medal in the 55-kg category.

Irfan Butt, who is representing Pakistan in the weightlifting category, ended in last place in the men’s 85-kg final. He lifted 91-kilogramme in the snatch and 108-kilogramme in the Clean and Jerk event.

Germany upset for Sculls gold

Lithuanian rower Rolandas Mascinskas upset Germany’s two-time world junior champion Felix Bach and to win the junior men’s single sculls gold. Although Felix entered the final as a favourite after clocking the fastest time during the semifinals, he never came close to Rolandas who led the field from the start and finished in three minutes and 13.82 seconds.
