‘We have got to stop Gayle’

New Zealand wary of main threat in 3rd ODI today.

Chris Gayle has been the main demolisher of New Zealand on the tour so far, scoring 85 not out and 53 in the two Twenty20s, and 63 not out and 125 in the One-Day Internationals (ODI).

Keeping that in mind, New Zealand all-rounder Nathan McCullum believes that the simplest way for his side to win was to get rid of Gayle early when the two sides meet today in the third match of the five-ODI series.

“We’ve just got to get him out,” said McCullum. “We’ve got some plans in place for him. Let’s hope they work, but we’re determined to take his wicket and get them under pressure at the top of the order.”

McCullum said that his side would have to put in a strong all round performance if they are to get back in the series they are trailing 2-0.

“We’ve got to be determined to win and find any way possible. We’ve got to take more wickets, burn through their top order and see what their bottom order has got under pressure. If we bat first, we’ve got to score hundreds and put big partnerships and big runs on the board.”

McCullum, initially rested for the limited-overs series, was called to the squad due to injuries and is now in contention for a place in the side today.

Meanwhile, the hosts’ captain Darren Sammy said his side was determined to secure the series win and end a four-year drought in which West Indies have not won an ODI series against anyone but Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and the ICC associates.

“We’ve been playing some really good cricket recently,” said all-rounder Sammy. “It is nice to see that we have been consistent in whatever we have been doing. We are just looking to continue the good work and clinch the series.”
