Smuggled artefacts

Letter July 07, 2012
Smuggling of centuries-old statues have become regular business in which members of bureaucracy are involved.

SUKKUR: A nation that cannot protect its history and culture has no past, present or future. The smuggling of centuries-old statues of Buddha, ancient coins and other important items excavated from Moenjodaro, Harrapa and Taxila seems to have become a regular business in which members of the bureaucracy are involved. Visit any rich Pakistani expatriate, retired bureaucrat or an ex-khaki living abroad and you will see these smuggled items displayed as ornaments in their homes.

The question is why doesn’t the government crack down on this trade?
