PIA's abrupt decadence started when they appointed Aslam R Khan, an over 70 years old former corrupt marketing officer for 3 months and than replaced him with corrupt unqualified high school drop out cronies like Aijaz Haroon and Nadeem Yousafzai, who played havoc with contracts for parts supply, leasing aircrafts, posting incompetent men on foreign postings and making a mess of Umrah and Hajj operation, appointing known corrupt men to head key departments like Marketing, Stores & Procurement, a matriculate as Director Administration and a former Clearing Forwarding agent as Director Marketing and than promoting him as DMD. Chairman PIA Ahmed Mukhtar has played a key role in destroying PIA. The $50,000/ a month DMD Ops & Engg has ruined this department, and in order to hide all these pilferages and corruption, a retired unqualified former Accounts officer, a US national appointed as Chief Internal Auditor.
Would somebody also raise questions about Emirates? Since Emirates have a practical monopoly over international traffic from Pakistan delays are a norm and you are directly made to travel long distances to the next gate as the flight is about to leave.
Emirates might be a private airline but it is landing on Pakistani airports and at least 90% of the flights are not on time.
When hiring is done on the basis of loyalties to PPP, then how can the airline survive? The current employees all of them from top to bottom are responsible for current state of affairs and they should all be fired.
@Jafri: AA. United. US Airways and Delta have a Jet fleet of over 550 aircraft each, besides hundreds of turbo-props. PIA has 39 jet aircraft (I recall) and another 8 or 9 turbo-props, i.e,.ATR-42s. So PIA does not rank even against budget carriers like Air Tran, Easyjet or Ryan Air.
@Hedgefunder: You have not answered my question. I was in London closely following BA privatization by Margaret Thatcher. The BA shares because of the recession dropped from 320p a bit but since then they have risen significantly giving the shareholders a good return. So you are absolutely wrong about BA, which remains one the most profitable, viable and premier name brand airline in the world. Its service is second to none and has a fantastic safety record. How does Air India compare to that or to PIA??? You are an Indian so answer the question instead of fudging around.
@Mohsin Jamali: Mr. Mohsin Jamli please do not compare US industry averages with PIA! The US carriers operate a fleet which is 5 times larger than PIA on average and are far more efficient with a lot lesser amount of employees my friend.
Like all other Pakistan's gold mines (railway, steel mill, etc.), PIA has suffered due to the corruption, incompetence and ignorance of our leadership. An airline which is behind the establishment of one of the top most airlines in the world, Emirates, faced delays on almost 36% of its flights in the first quarter of 2012. What does that tell you?
@Parvez: Yes, I agree with you , as is the case with Air India too !
If PIA is closed down nothing earth shaking will happen. Its an industry and the void will be filled plus the national exchequer will benefit. The politicians, bureaucrats, retired Air Force people and free loaders will suffer and that is why PIA will not be shut down.
@Baby ka Husband: Yes , they are both burden to the state and gravy train for all employees with pensions and perks not seen in private sectors! I remember buying BA share back in 1987 and i, infact shorted them on launch, and i still remember making handsome profit from that deal ! These organisations acted as Flag carriers of their Nations, however being funded by the State has reduced them to shambles and in these days the Taxpayers are entitled to ask questions as to their basic management .
"shahbash" national carrier ,it is only due the attitude and behaviour of work team who are led by the political appointees at heavy top management i e corps of GMs.
@Disappointed: Take the train. Why be disappointed with PIA, says Baby.
Anyone who wants PIA to be closed has gone absolutely nuts. Millions would become unemployed and social order will break down
It is not the business of the government to operate airlines. PIA should be sold off to a private investor. Unions should be banned and the organisation needs to be trimmed down.
@Hedgefunder: Since you are an Indian can you compare PIA with Air India and tell us where it stands??? Thank You.
so shall we point fingers at Zardari, Gilani and P Ashraf ? or do we need to look inwards to see who actually is responsible for this ... inefficient workforce !!!
since 2001 i stoped flying on this great AIr line...
PIA is a white elephant and rather slack as a brand ! It should be sold off to private sector and brought to function on sound economic and business model. The problem is that PIA is simply too far in the game to become competative against the middle eastern airlines in both costs and service, hence ideal solution should be closure and assets to be sold off in private sector, including the routes.
What constitutes a delay? By 10 minutes, 2 hours what?
This is a norm in this type of industry. US airline industry maintains at an average of 30% for flight delays and it is a developed world. This could have been more in developing countries. I know the structure of the government owned organization is not up to the mark but it is bad to compare it without any rational and we should not get biased. Largely the disappointment is cascading and not actual.
Truly disappointed by PIA.
Make someone to pay for these delays.... PIA chairman or CEO is responsible to the losses to the national exchequer. I wonder what salary he draws.
