Yasir wants to be Pakistan’s next hope
Pakistan’s number two tennis player Yasir Khan will play local tournaments in Barcelona for three months in order to improve himself and also stand a chance of representing Pakistan in singles events.
The 23-year-old, who regularly reaches finals of domestic tournaments along with his older brother Aqeel Khan, has been sponsored by a local pharmaceutical company and plans on leaving for Spain next week. However, before participating in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Future events to gain ranking points, Yasir is focusing on improving his game as he aims to replace Aqeel and Aisamul Haq as Pakistan’s next best tennis player.
“I want to be Pakistan’s next hope,” Yasir told The Express Tribune. “In order to pursue my international career, it only makes sense that I first improve my game. Three months in Barcelona, playing domestic tournaments with professionally trained players every week, will push me to my limits and help me get required exposure. I have enough time. If anything, I will prove myself in next year’s Davis Cup ties.”
According to Yasir, he has opted for domestic matches in Spain because he has realised he will not be able to make an impact in ITF events on current form.
“Also, I’m focusing on my singles career. Tennis is an individual game be it Davis Cup or a singles career. Even if I play international tournaments on my own, I will still be representing Pakistan. But only after this tour will I consider entering the ITF Futures.”
