Karachi residents protest against acute water shortage

People from different areas protested outside Karachi Press Club against shortage of water for over 2 months.

KARACHI: A large number of people from different areas of the city protested outside Karachi Press Club against the shortage of water in their area for over two months.

Ridding on the roofs of minibuses, the residents of Pirabad, Muslimabad, Katti Pahari, Qasba Colony, Islamia Colony and Mohammadpur Road warned that they would encircle the Governor House and Chief Minister House if the shortage was not resolved within a week.

“We don’t even have a single drop of water since the illegal water hydrants were installed on water-board pipelines at Manghopir Road,” said Ikramullah, 34, a resident of Muslimabad. “We cannot afford to buy water tankers to meet our water demands.”

Bacha Hussain, 35, a resident of Pirabad said that the population of Qasba Colony and its neighbouring areas has increased, and the water supply which was meant for 10,000 people now fells short. “Around 10 years ago four-inch piplines were installed for around 10,000 people but now the population has increased upto three times. Water does not reach the areas near Katti Pahari.”

They protestors demanded that water pumps be installed in Qasba Colony and Katti Pahari and urged the government to take stern action against illegal water hydrant owners.
