FAISALABAD: The station house officer of Gulberg police and another policeman were on Saturday made to pay Rs10,000 in damages to a man they illegally detained for two nights. District and sessions judge Muhammad Rasheed Qamar issued the directive after SIs Asim Nazeer, also the SHO, and Manzoor Husain admitted to having kept one Ali Abbas in custody since Thursday night. They said he was held for questioning in a murder case, but failed to produce any record of the said case before the court. Abbas was recovered from Gulberg police by a court bailiff on Saturday on a petition filed by his relative, Umar Daraz. Abbas told the court that he was picked up from his house without any court warrants at around midnight. He said he was moved to a lockup at Gulberg police station where he was held till the bailiff’s raid on Saturday morning.
