RAWALPINDI: Traffic on one side of the busy Benazir Bhutto Road came to a standstill for around three hours on Sunday as political activists rallied against unemployment and power and gas outages. The rally was organised by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Thousands of protests led by the local Members of National Assembly and Members of Provincial Assembly took part in the rally.

People started gathering at Liaquat National Bagh by 5pm in the evening and then marched towards Islamabad on motorcycles and in vehicles. On their way, other rallies joined them at different points with donkey carts.

The protestors stopped at a point on the Islamabad Expressway, where they blocked the road and made speeches.

The local PML-N legislators criticised the federal government for not doing anything for the welfare of the people. They also raised slogans against President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani for disobeying orders of the Supreme Court.

The protestors remained there for about an hour before peacefully dispersed.
