Official sources said that the attack took place near the Karikot square, west of Wana, the main town of South Waziristan Agency. Sources said that “heavy weapons and ammunition were used” in the attack, confirming that one security person was killed and one injured as security forces successfully repulsed the attack.
A resident of the area, who did not want to be named, told The Express Tribune that the civilians had been asked to move out of the Wana Bazar and that “intermittent firing was heard” late into the night.
More casualties were feared, however, communication was difficult to establish in the area as the fighting continued past midnight.
