No torture marks: Under-trial prisoner dies in custody

Jail authorities say prisoner died on way to hospital after complaining of severe pain.

KARACHI: An under-trial prisoner (UTP) died under mysterious circumstances on Saturday. The victim identified as Samson James lived in F C Area Liaquatabad and was arrested by the Gulberg police in a robbery case and was sent to Central Jail, Karachi on February 7. Jail authorities said Samson died on way to hospital after complaining of severe pain. His postmortem was carried out in the presence of Magistrate Nadeem Qazi. Senior medico-legal officer Dr Qarar Abbasi said that apparently, the victim’s body had no mark of torture. Samples from the body of the deceased UTP were sent to the laboratory for chemical examination to determine the cause of death.
