ISLAMABAD: Norwegian Ambassador to Pakistan Cecilie Landsverk has on Friday said that investors from the Scandinavian country are interested in opportunities in hydro-electric power and gas in Pakistan.

She was talking to the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Vice President Mirza Abdul Rehman and other officials, according to a statement issued here.

“Pakistan has great potential in generating electricity using the natural force of water,” she said. She said that optimum utilisation of the hydropower potential, with help from the international community, can resolve the power shortfall on a sustainable basis. “Hydropower is the best way to bridge the gap between electricity generation and consumption, and it will improve the ratio of low-cost electricity in the system to stabilise tariffs,” said Landsverk.

She said that Norwegian investors are also interested in the ‘promising’ onshore and offshore gas sectors of Pakistan. In reciprocation, Landsverk advised the Pakistani business community to focus on food chains in Norway.

“There are great business possibilities here [in Pakistan] but perceptions in the west have not improved over the last few years, which are blocking investment,” she added.  “The international business community is more concerned than it should be,” she underlined.

On the occasion, Rehman asked for cooperation in overcoming the energy crisis, resumption of fisheries’ exports and initiation of projects aimed at imparting vocational training to youth.  He said that Norway’s fruit and vegetable chains should visit Pakistan to explore opportunities.

“Norwegian designers can help educate our artisans about the taste and demand patterns of European countries to help boost exports,” added Rehman.

Rehman revealed that an FPCCI delegation is to visit Norway to explore opportunities in different sectors, including the pharmaceutical and surgical sectors.
