Brutal violence: Acid attack victim succumbs to injuries

Relatives, neighbours demand public hanging of the accused.

FAISALABAD:

A woman, injured in an acid attack last week, succumbed to her injures at a hospital on Wednesday. Her daughter, 6, was also injured, but is now out of danger.

The two were thrown acid at by an unidentified motorcyclist while they were on their way to a market in Samanabad area. Passers-by had taken them to Allied Hospital.

Following her death, some of her relatives and neighbours staged a demonstration in Akbar Chowk and placed the body on the road.

They demanded that the assailant be caught and hanged in public.

The 35-year-old woman, a resident of Islam Nagar on Risala Road, had 35 per cent burns. She had been in the intensive care unit all this time. Dr Nagra, the ward in charge who has been treating the woman and her daughter said the woman’s face, eyes, arms and chest had been badly burned. She said the child was recovering and will likely survive.

The victim had accused one Ejaz of the attack. The suspect was arrested on June 3 and has denied the allegations. He told police that it was the deceased who had wanted to marry him and that he had refused her.

He said she had previously attempted to suicide by pouring acid at herself in front of him, but he had managed to stop her. He said he was also injured in the episode and showed police some scars.

Police officials said a medical examination of the scars had been conducted to ascertain his claim. They are awaiting his report.
