A day after he was stripped of his Senate membership, Rehman Malik was reinstated as in charge of interior affairs, albeit with a different title.
“The president, on the advice of the prime minister, has been pleased to appoint, with immediate effect, Mr A Rehman Malik as adviser to the prime minister on interior, with the status of a federal minister,” read a notification issued by the Cabinet Secretariat on Tuesday.
Malik held the same post prior to becoming a member of the Senate in 2009.
Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani had issued directives to the Cabinet division to reinstate Malik as an adviser.
Following his new appointment, Malik has been given charge of the interior ministry and will now be allowed entry into the National Assembly and the Senate.
A senior official of the prime minister secretariat officially confirmed the notification. Malik will hold this post until the Supreme Court issues a final verdict in the dual nationality case.
