Dug-up roads

Letter June 01, 2012
Dug-up roads pose serious problems for the residents of these areas who find it difficult to travel on them.

KARACHI: There are countless localities in Karachi where roads have been dug up by the authorities in order to lay down new telephone or sewerage lines but due to inexplicable reasons, the work is abandoned before being completed and the roads are left in terrible conditions.

Such dug-up roads pose serious problems for the residents of these areas who find it difficult to travel on them. In addition, during the monsoon, rain water collects on the roads worsening their condition tenfold and causing traffic jams. I fail to understand the logic behind digging up roads and then leaving them like that for months on end without any reason. I request the authorities concerned to look into the matter as soon as possible and ensure that all work related to laying down of telephone or sewerage lines is completed at the earliest so that the pain caused to residents and commuters is alleviated.
