Addressing a gathering on Tuesday, Gilani said that the Punjab government, instead of working for the people of the province, is trying to hold the parliament hostage with a handful of members. “People are wasting their time.”
Gilani had been convicted of contempt of court by the Supreme Court. However, as per rules, the Speaker of the National Assembly would decide whether the conviction would disqualify Gilani from the house, and thus from the office of the Prime Minister. Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza though decided that the conviction did not disqualify the Prime Minister.
Commenting on the upcoming budget, Gilani stated that the government will try to provide relief to the nation.
Both PML-N and PTI had filed their petitions on the same day, May 28, in the Supreme Court against Speaker of National Assembly Dr Mirza’s ruling in which she refused to disqualify Gilani.
PML-N’s petition was filed through MNA Khawaja Muhammad Asif. Asif had made Gilani and the law ministry secretary respondents in the petition. The petition, according to a handout issued by the party earlier, questioned whether the right of a fair trial also mandates a corresponding duty to abide by the verdict of a fair trial, which cannot be violated by the Speaker NA.
The PTI petition stated:
Court may graciously be pleased to declare the decision of Speaker National Assembly as unconstitutional, void and in violation of fundamental rights of access to justice and independence of judiciary. It is further prayed that this honourable court may graciously be pleased to direct ECP to decide the question of disqualification of the Prime Minister, as having been deemed to be have been referred to it under Article 63 (2) and (3).

@Logic Europe: Victim of revenge ??? who is taking revenge from him ???
Wake up and smell the CR@P around you. People of pakistan should take revenge from this incompetent fool and his whole corrupt family and when that day comes, he would not find refuge anywhere on this earth. These leaders have such short memories that they forget what happened to Sadam and Ghaddafi and all those who started believing that they were GODs .... Unfortunately the water has crossed the bridge now, after 6 months he and his entourage are gona be tried for the crimes against pakistan, the judgement day is not far my friend .... TUM BHI DEKHO GAY .. MAIN BHI DEKHOON GA
@Shah: We should all leave ... if it was up to the dishonorable PM, he would only have himself and his sons and PPP stay in pakistan .... Nothings gona happen .... this is another TOPI Drama .....
Petitions are pointless publicity. Since when as of recently has the court kept to itself when it thinks its own ruling has been jeopardized?
GILANI is victim of revenge He is honourable he should not leave his office to please a few loosers like Nawaz and Imran khan when politicians go to courts time and again then it is clear they cannot win the election IMRAN KHAN WILL NOT WIN HIS OWN SEAT Peole who grudge PPP will soon see that party back to power again unless some military man conspires like they did in the past
You have no right to stay as PM as you have been convicted. It's people like you who are a threat to democracy.
@Bukhari
You state “. . . The speaker has higher authority than any court in the country, especially in the case of any member of the national assembly . . . ."
You exaggerate the Speakers position. For all intense and purposes, the Supreme Court, in matters of law and interpretation of the Constitution, is the highest office in the land.
I totally agree with you on your interpretation of Nawaz's actions. However, your opinion of Imran Khan is flawed. His intention and dedication to serve the nation towards betterment is supported by the thousands that show up for his rallies. His action of filling an action in courts against the Speakers decision not to refer Gilani's case to the election commission is totally justified on many grounds. Leaving the legal aspect, let’s just address the moral factor. Morality I believe still plays a big role in our Islamic culture. I am no fan of Gilani , however , had he stepped down I would have respected him. For him to stay on as PM on a technicality gives him a few more months in the office, but his selfish decision erodes Pakistan's image on the world stage
Zardari is winning (not at-least the Charlie Sheen way). Somehow magically everyone forgot him and none is talking about him any more. Gilani is nobody and just a pawn. It does not matter if he is there or not.. courts and political parties are just wasting their time.
Folks! welcome your president for next 5 years. He is gonna stay here for a while.. and his cut is gonna be more than 10% this time
Really, it looks like everything messed up....
All that you did was right mister?
@ hassan bukhari is not it hypocracy that at one end we say NRO was wrong and on the other hand mr Gillani is beneficiary of Nro. And you say he is right ful of being our premier. Almost whole of his family has allegations of corruption Allah bless our nation
"Commenting on the upcoming budget, Gilani stated that the government will try to provide relief to the nation." And what else have you been doing for the last 4 years besides trying? All of your insincere and futile attempts to provide relief to the nation have failed miserably. Gilani, the time of trying and trial has ended, and it is in the next elections that you will ask for relief from the nation by asking them to overlook your lack of governance, unmatchable corruption, and inept policies. I hope you and your party lose miserably in the next elections and we get someone who is both sincere and pragmatic.
Just like you said 'SO WHY DON'T THEY LEAVE' we have a question for you sir! SO WHY DON'T YOU LEAVE?
The speaker has higher authority than any court in the country, especially in the case of any member of the national assembly.
Imran Khan has shown he is just someone who does something for the sake of doing it but not actually following up or it having any meaning at all... just like what he did with the Altaf Hussain case.
Nawaz Shareef is just yearning to get back in the position of PM and cannot tolerate the fact that some else but him is actually running the show. All losers.
Gilani is rightly elected, wrongly convicted and righteous in every way unless he is actually proven guilty of some real crime.
why what`s wrong with PML N & PTI filing petition against NA Speakers action ? everyone has a right to to go to court to interpret constitutional clause against which NA Speaker has acted.
Why can't he just leave the office, leave us alone for heaven sake.
Look who's telling us what's right and what's wrong!
