After proving herself in Hindi films, National Award winner Vidya Balan now wants to try her luck in Marathi films.
“I want to do Marathi films. There is some great work happening in Marathi cinema. Marathi movies are doing well,” she said during the promotional event of Ferrari ki Sawaari in the city on Friday.
Balan, who is not a trained dancer, always wanted to do a lavani dance and was more than happy to do a lavani item number in Ferrari ki Sawaari. In a complete red sari, Vidya sizzled on stage as she performed the item number for the audience. On public demand, she was asked to repeat the performance.
“I always had a dream to do a lavani. But I thought lavani is done only in Marathi films but I was amazed when I got a call from Chopra productions. I was more than happy to do this dance,” she said.
The actor claims she has not received any adverse attention for this song. “I haven’t come across any criticism yet for this song. I got a call from someone who said that I reminded them of some authentic lavani dancers. I am happy for myself.”
When asked who her inspiration was, Balan said, “Madhuri Dixit of course. I really liked Madhuri’s song in Sailaab and Sangeet. I also admire Smita Patil in Bhoomika.”
Double or nothing
The Bollywood actor has essayed a range of characters in showbiz, but she says she always wanted to do a double role.
“I have always wanted to do a double role. Only Sridevi and Hemaji (Hema Malini) have done it so far,” Balan told reporters. “We don’t have double roles for some reason in films anymore. For the longest time after Parineeta, people just wanted to see me as Parineeta. And they didn’t think I was capable of much else. They wanted to pigeonhole me into a stereotype of sorts.”
“But then slowly, one began to push the envelope and thankfully the audience has accepted me with open arms. I was getting to do all these things and make a point,” stated the 33-year-old.

I think regional cinema, especially Marathi cinema is exploring some really bold themes. Marathi films have very good content compared to high budget Bollywood films with no content. There was a golden period of Marathi cinema when there were films made by V. Shantaram, Raja Paranjpe, Now since Shwaas, there is no turning back for Marathi films. Some of the great Marathi films are Deeol, Shwaas, Mee Sindhutai Sapkal, Valu, Kadachit, Vihir, Mee Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy, Tingya, Gabhiricha Paus, Khalti Doka Varti Paay and the list goes on. Marathi International screenings are influencing Marathi films because of rich content.
I wish Marathi films with subtitles were screened in Pakistan.
@ukmuslim- me too.
This is so pathetic and not the first time. Every time I see such a news out of nowhere having an indian actor or for that matter any international actor in news for no reason, it boils me up. I mean you have every right to give coverage if it is worthy, but such headlines I dont think justify space in any newspaper in Pakistan. I mean couldnt you find anything of worth to fill this space. Nothing against India, but the space is not properly used thats what I mean.
i would love to see her in marathi movie. its my mother tongue.
@Ebrahim: you got to be kidding :) u guys make 1 or 2 good films in 3 yrs to 4yrs. ! even though bollywood copies from hollywood..the fact is we have a strong market in USA, UK, Middleast, poland and Germany( mostly srk films) , africa etc.... even if majority of these audiences are NRIs ... the fact is our film industry gives a good image in our country abroad whtether ppl like it or not... and gives good tax revenue for our country and helps promote tourism in other countries when shootings take place.....
Way to go Vidya. Talent knows no boundaries. I encourage you to act in Pakistani movies too.
I want to do Marathi films: Vidya Balan
And we should care why?
@kaalchakra Are you sure about that? I really like vidya.
Who is she?
Amazing! Path-breaking work is being done in Saudi, Iranian, and Turkish cinema that Pakistan can actually care for and be inspired by, and all we get to read on ET is about some talentless, skimpy-clothed Indian actresses.
ET should seriously conduct a survey of its readers to ask if we really want to know about Bollywood junk. I am sure 99.9% of educated, well-informed Pakistanis couldn't care about these so-called smita patels, and madhari dixits,
Plzzzzz
