The good, the bad and the IPL

Letter May 24, 2012
Mr Sen shouldn’t be blaming the entire IPL just because of the bad deeds of a few players and patrons.

NEW DELHI: This is with reference to Avirook Sen’s article “The good, the bad and the IPL” (May 24). Getting in to the Indian national team is very hard for a young player. And the other problem with the Indian team is that they usually don’t give a chance to new players all that readily. So what choice does a young player have then?

It is here where the IPL plays a role. It provides these young players, not all of whom can make it to the national team, the opportunity to earn a living. It pays well and gives these young Indian players a chance to play alongside the world’s best cricketers. And this experience of playing in the IPL not only helps them financially, it also allows them to improve their game. Mr Sen shouldn’t be blaming the entire IPL just because of the bad deeds of a few players and patrons. After all, it is a very successful business venture, providing jobs to thousands of people associated with the tournament and keeping India’s stadiums full.
