EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ: Ivory Coast handed former World Champions Italy a shock 1-0 loss in an international friendly.

Italy went close to going ahead just two minutes into the game, after the Azzurri were awarded a free-kick for Didier Zokora’s handball. But Mario Balotelli, one of three Italians making their debut under new coach Cesare Prandelli, fired just over the bar.

On the half-hour mark, both teams missed easy chances. But just as Italy seemed to be gaining the upper hand, Kolo Toure was the man to break the deadlock ten minutes into the second half. Guy Demel floated a cross from the left for the Manchester City defender to nod past Sirigu and spark celebrations from the Ivory Coast-supporters.

Brazil beat US 2-0

A youthful Brazil side enjoyed an impressive 2-0 win over the US in a friendly, handing new coach Mano Menezes a victory in his first game in charge.

Winger Neymar, who was left out of coach Dunga’s World Cup squad, produced an excellent debut performance including grabbing the opening goal in what was an upbeat and encouraging display.

After troubling the American defence from the outset, Brazil went ahead in the 28th minute when left-back Andre Santos broke down the flank and whipped in a superb cross to the back post, which Neymar met with a header.

The second goal came in time added-on at the end of the first half when a simple passing move from the back, ended with Ramires playing in Alexandre Pato who slotted past Tim Howard.

The US, who picked a largely first choice side, struggled to cope with Brazil’s slick passing and movement and were unable to create much with their limited possession.

Michael Bradley had a second half header ruled out for offside but it was a lacklustre display from the US team. The outstanding performance was of great encouragement to the Brazilians, who are looking forward to hosting the 2014 World Cup.
