The protestors were rallying against the proposed Mohajir province and operation in Lyari.
Soon after the attack, the protest turned violent and dozens of cars and motorbikes were torched. The violence, which erupted in the Napier Road area, spread to the nearby localities including Lyari.
Police personnel deployed to maintain security failed to control the situation, however, after Rangers arrived, violence was brought under control.
Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has taken notice of the violence and has sought a report from the Sindh government.
Meanwhile Express News reported that Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that Awami Tehreek and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, PAC, Punjabi-Pakhtun Ittehad (PPI), KCI had participated in the rally, but they had not sought prior permission from the government. A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has been formed to investigate into the matter.
Later, while commenting on Twitter, Malik said he had proposed to Chief Minister Sindh for an inquiry into the incident through a judge of the Sindh High Court. The Court should then ascribe responsibility for a probe.
The interior minister, further tweeted late Tuesday night, posing questions to the parties involved in the rally, asking why Ayub Awan, Ayaz Latif Palijo and particularly PML-N’s Marvi Memon led 2000 people into sensitive areas including Lyari and Kharadar.
Malik blamed PML-N for the deaths, caused due to the violence.
He also shrugged off any responsibility for the episode of violence, saying that it was the responsibility of the local police, Home Secretary Sindh and Chief Minister Sindh, adding that he is only responsible for providing logistical support and forces.
The Awami Tehreek has announced to observe a day of mourning on Wednesday.
While speaking to Express News, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Wasay Jalil expressed sorrow over the incident and called it a planned activity.
Due to today's violence, Board of Intermediate Education in Karachi and Hyderabad have postponed exams scheduled to be held on Wednesday. The exams will now be held on May 30 in Karachi and May 26 in Hyderabad.

@Kamal Kazmi: Napier Road is controlled by MQM and not PPP. Real aunty of Altaf Bhai has a well established bussiness there.
Islam has become a convenient scapegoat for the ignorant to lay the blame on for all this turmoil in Pakistan and beyond. Iqbal once said "Muslims diligently preserved the rituals of prayers, fasting, sacrifice and pilgrimage but there was no God in any of them anymore", the problem lies with Muslims not Islam.
They( the supporters of racist, fascist, the biggest extortion mafia) even did not admit their involvement in the May 12 mayhem when the whole world was watching their activists Live on TV ambushing rallies heading to the airport to welcome CJP Iftikhar Chaudhry .. how could they admit this time when there is no such "concrete evidence" of their involvement ??? I mean they take only a second to deny "solid evidences" .. one second and they say NO to all documented proofs and at the same time they call themselves the most educated, civilised . Such a attitude is extremely condemnable ..
look at the level of intolerance ... even if you take out a rally against their viewpoint, they will ambush it .. every time they commit massacre and soon after that they are the first to raise hue and cry and claim to be innocent and at the receiving hand ironically ..
Islam is a peaceful religion. These people cannot be Muslims.
let US sort this out.....
No one supports the ridiculous Mohajir Sooba notion except MQM Fascists. Every other Karachi based party is against it even MQM H. May 12 all over again. If you read MQM press release today its pretty self incriminating.
@Zamir Malik: Quetta has always been a Pashtun Majority area. In fact all the District surrounding it have been pashtun areas for hundreds of years (Pishin, Ziarat,Zhob, Mastung,Musa Khel , Kila Abdullah). ANP is almost non existent in Quetta. Baloch and Pashtuns get along historically through out Bolochistan, due to cultural similarities. your post has to be the dumbest I have read on ET yet.Dont you people study geography any more?
PML-N is too much hurt on the division of Punjab and so are their followers in Sindh. This brutal incident should be investigated by a panel of Sindh High Court Judges.
@True Muslim Paki: You must be delusional or an insane to think all of us are muslims. A muslim is a peacemaker so dont use this is as a lable. There is no islamic state. Take your head out of the sand!!!!
This is price PP have to pay in Sindh for its Saraiki soba or dividing Punjab efforts !
The Two-Nation (Multi-nation ?) theory seems to be still alive and well with no end!
This is sad day of our history and it will leave deep scars on our mind and hearts. Terrorists and their supporters will be defeated with power of people. Sindhis will never forget this terrorist actions against them.
This is what happens when you have a convicted person as PM and a man convicted in a Swiss court as president. This is what happens when the two sons of the so-called PM are involved in heinous crimes like Haj scandal and illegal drug scandal.
This is why in mature, genuine democracies people in office resign if they are indicted or convicted.
Convicted people in top leadership have no moral or ethical authority to control such situations. Imagine this - a convicted PM appears on TV and addresses the nation and asks them to follow law, which he himself refuses to follow.
Pathetic situation !
wilethis is sad, i cant understand how a banned group is able to hold rallies.
@Kamal Kazmi You shouldnt thank God for such a sad incident. In these tragic times you should look at both sides. Both sides the Sindhi nationalists and Muhajir separatists are right however only way to solve this muck is by dialogue at "awam" level. MQM PPP all have vested interest, no credibility what so ever.
@All, As an urdu speaking (new sindhi) i am totally against any division of sindh. Jeay Sindh , Jeay Pakistan.
Everyone has the right to protest if they want to, but this kind of act is something nobody appreciated. On the other hand, the government is busy making provinces but when it comes to Muhajir sooba they are reluctant and so many people are opposing it. I myself do not consider myself a sindhi, punjabhi or muhajir. I am a Pakistani. What's the harm in making another province? Yes, Karachi should not complain about lack or resources but people of Karachi should complain about the fact that 70% of Pakistan's tax is generated by Karachi and the rest of the country is busy in consuming the tax and not concentrating on generating their own revenue. I personally think it is a good call. Other provinces should learn to contribute for themselves. People of Pakistan living in Karachi worked hard and struggled hard to achieve what they are today and we should acknowledge this fact. I am not saying that all the taxes of Karachi should be consumed by Karachi but majority should be given to Karachi for development. If people do not pay taxes they should stay backwards. Exception are those who belong to lesser developed regions like Baluchistan. Karachi is very diverse and at-least the people do not mind presence of people belonging to any region but are they welcomed the same way in parts like interior Sindh?
PPP and PMLN started this whole new provinces mess, South Punjab & Hazara and now the entire Karachi is up in flames; shame on Gillani and Nawaz
Forget any ethnicity and think for a second: Does every one have basic right to register peaceful protest? If yes, then in the presence of Police squad, if terrorists attacked a rally and killed innocent people, should they be brought to Justice or not? So are you with who were attacked or those who attacked? R u with terrorists or with innocent people who lost their lives?
@ Muhammad usman hit the nail on the head. how long have the mohajirs been here asking for a province of their own. when the people of saraiki belt, hazara or pashtoon in Baluchistan ask for a province , they make the claim on the basis of the fact that they have been owners of that land for centuries now. I am a mohajir myself and my parents migrated from hyderabad Deccan. my parents never forget the beneficience of sindhis in helping them first in mirpur khas and later in karachi. just like the Arab's camel drove him out of his own tent, my community, or a hijacked part of it to be precise, is hellbent on driving sindhis out of their own homes.
mohajir sooba is our right and we will take it at any cost
Mian Shareef's strategy to stir ethnic divide in Sindh takes a toll of lives. Can PML(N) win seats in Sindh now? Do they have a plan to heal the wounds they scratched? MQM, Peoples Amn Committee, PML(N) and some sindhi nationalists reinforced state repression by inciting ethnic hatred. They are the enemies of the people.
PPP has lit the fire by advocating separate province for south Punjab. This was based on language. Now if the Urdu speaking people want their own province, what is wrong in that? You reap as you saw !
where the hell do these guys get Ammunition from? what is the state doing ? Didnt you face a similar situation in lyari when will you stop being blood thirsty.First thing first get the damn guns of the street, hang anybody who has a illegal weapons, ban all sorts of weapons from the streets of Pakistan for a period of 10 years anybody caught flouting this law or helping flout the law should be hanged by fast track courts, cases against such individuals should be filed investigated and justice delivered under 90 days.
Why can’t our political parties, peace committees or any tom dick or harry hold rallies in stadiums or in far off open spaces. Why in the center of the main city where they disturb everyone’s life, and are prone to such terrorist incidence and mayhem.
Did the peace committee even though about their action disturbing peace of the people there to earn a living, or are living there.
Secondly please move the Karachi press Club in the middle of the ocean, maybe on Oyster Island or maybe somewhere far on Superhighway. Let them all go there and leave this city in peace. It is a perpetual protest site for all, for no rhyme or reason.
So MQM doesnt allow anyone to hold a rally even and then talks about being pushed to the wall and blah blah blah....... leeeches and hypocrites (The party, not the Urdu speaking people)
Karachi is at mercy of violent gangs, terrorists and militants. The writ of state is no more in Karachi. A peaceful rally was attacked in the presence of Police and many innocent people sacrificed their lives to protect territorial integrity of Sindh. SC should take suo motu notice of this grave situation because we have no hope in this PPP-MQM govt.
Mohajir Soba is just demand.
Wasay jalil said incident happend because of this strike when other does and cause all the blood shed what is that my friend...
@rafiq
Honestly, Raw doesn't have to lift a finger. And besides any group of people that falls apart and resorts to violence for such flimsy reasons deserves it. To be this weak and selfish is just asking for punishment.
Dear God, Allama Iqbal was pretty much pointing the deficiencies of Muslims with a large, red banner years ago and we are still stuck in same quagmire of me me me anti social behaviour. He wasn't sprouting pretty poetry you know. It was as relevant now as it was in the 1920s and by the looks of things it will be relevant forever.
How can MQM tolerate & forgive anyone who think they have right to protest against them in Karachi?? No Sir Never.. You have to pay 4 ur difference of opinion.
Why All peopled united againts "Mohajir Soba" ?Why they can't speak up when people talk about Breaking of Pakistan (Allah Na Karay)....they all are not sincere with Pakistan.
Jeay Pakistan
Violence and Karachi have too much in common.
@Muhammad Usman
If Sikhs were to become a majority in Canada's British Columbia in 20 years time, I can give 100% guarantee that Canada will give them a Sikh Province. In Canada there are several roads that have foreign names ie little india, china town, etc. In the USA Obama (a non white) was even elected as President and in the USA you have several states that are for the blacks with a predominant black population.
So technically that can be applied for a Mohajir Suba in Pakistan also. However I still feel that people should think of being muslims first. These political issues can be resolved peacefully when there is no hatred based on ethnicity and there is love based on same religion (Islam). Just like in Europe, where each country speaks a different language but they are united as one European Union. I wish we could take some lessons from the west even though we should be taking lessons from the Quran and Hadith. The west has applied the Islamic principle of 'United Ummah' but we muslims have long forgotten it.
Is not very strange that our Prime Minister who is dying to get a Seriaki suba is only quiet on the division of Sindh. Sometimes it seems as if nothing exist for him save a suba in Multan. For today's bloodbath he is responsible.
Today is a repeat of May 12, 2007 attacks...
No partition of Sind, no Karachi and Hyderabad as a Mohajir sooba, if that happens, there will be generation after generation of bloodshed between Sindis and Mohajirs, and MQM right wing elements will try and ethnically cleanse Karachi of all the various communities that live here. Karachi is a city for all Pakistanis, every community lives here, and for all these communities to co-exist peacefully, defacto situation of Sind must not change, Karachi must stay the mega city with Sind as its hinter land. Every community from Pakistan lives in Karachi, non Urdu speakers will be in danger if a separate province is carved out, The Punjabis, the Seraikis the Balochis, the Hazaras, the Pashtun communities will be in danger. Those calling for a Mohajir sooba are just opportunists who want to take away from Others, already most of Karachi is in their hands, what little is in the hands of others will be snatched away brutally.
Imran Khans match is fixed with MQM he will not comment on this.
This is 100% MQM... behind the incident.
PPP is responsible for using the word Seraikistan in the first place. They should have preferred South Punjab if they were so much interested in the solving the problems of the common.
North Punjab, South Punjab, North Sindh, South Sindh ... This would do it !
Look at biased reporting of Jang Instead of saying firing on rally they are saying karachi may firing key waqiat... Kudos to express in at least reporting what is happening.
I will request my FRIENDS from Karachi to be tolerant.
A demand for fair local bodies is a just one , but not for a province.
It is like SIKHS in British Columbia demanding separate province.
Antony
Please don't judge Islam by the behavior of its followers. Judge it by the behavior you would like, even if followers of other religions, not followers of Islam, show that behavior.
This whole city needs to be under strict military control with no 'area' of MQM or 'area' of PPP.
@rafiq: even i was missing pakistani's favorite punching bag, called raw. glad that you reminded them all.
@True Muslim Paki, "All are Muslims here & fighting to death" and thats what I was wondering .First create a nation for Muslims and within that you are all fighting again saying this and that . Yes Islam is religion of peace. look at its followers.
I think we need to resolve provinces issues rather their issues by creating new provinces will make more issues at all level. Poor leadership i must say
These nationalist losers have nothing against MQM so they are making a non issue a major issue. There is no demand of any Mohajir Province except some wall chalking here and there. MQM has never required any such province. Its so obvious objective is to kill people in the name of language and cause direst. I had a lot of respect for Marvi. I wonder how she has gone so low for small political gain.
Is this called "Sense of deprivation"?? This is how so called educated people's party of Karachi behave? Peaceful rally was attacked in the heart of Karachi in the presence of Police. As per reports 5 people were killed and more than 20 were injured. This reminds me 12 May, 7 April, October incident, Nashtar Park attack. Against such brutality and injustice, all human right activists, lawyers, civil society and media persons should raise their voice. No one has right to stop peaceful demonstrations. This shows which group is violent and intolerant and they are crossing their limits and through such actions, they are bringing chaos, and instability in Pakistan.
@TheOne: the only link u missing here is RAW this is india and usa's billions in action in karachi
Muhajir Sooba is unjust demand.I have never seen a developed area with so much privileges wants separation from the poor part of province to alieanate the sons of soil. This unjust demand does not equate demand for Saraiki province which has been there due to their consistent exploitation by "Takht e Lahore".Just derive any criteria, you must support their demand.
I am from Saraikistan but i support Sindhi's demand to keep their province intact. The native sindhis have sacrificed so much for Pakistan and for urdu speaking people. Please urdu spekaing people donot treat Sindhi with contempt and stay in united Sindh.
As this forum is dominated by urdu speakers and Punjbais so i donot find many comments supporting Sindhi's demand for united Sindh.United Sindh and Saraikistan for prosperous Pakistan.
It is a shame that muslims are divided as sindhi, mohajir, punjabi, pathan ,etc and even kill each other on this basis and are not prepared to give any land or province to their muslim brothers. On the other hand the non muslims are united. As Gilani said, NATO is not just USA's army but that of 48 other countries as well. Do we have a united Islamic army of all the muslim nations? We are not even united as muslims within Pakistan not to talk of the whole muslim ummah. Shame on Pakistani Muslims....when will we leave aside love for language, ethnicity, land, province, etc and show love for ISLAM and fellow muslims... Even in the comments section people are showing their tribal mindset. Some one comments as 'sindhvoice' some one as 'mohajir' but no one comments as 'Islamvoice'.
Shame! All are Muslims here & fighting to death. What kind of Islamic state we are? Where is the feeling umm ah! Am very disappointed with this animal like behavior. You'll all see on the judgement day! All I say is forget this animosity towards muslims & behave like pure Muslim.
Karachi is burning since generation of MQM
Sindhis are ruling over Sindh. Shops and businesses of urdu speaking people are being burnt down again. The burnt cars and motocycles mostly belong to Karachites. This is wrong. This will only widen the divide. The action is deplorable. All of a sudden violence erupts in Karachi. Who is calling the shots?
Karachites must stand up to all the injustices they have endured since 1947!
May 12 and this one is showing something who is behind this murders????
@Abid Ali: Area was not of MQM's and Urdu Speeking that Was PPP's Area and Lyari Gang War's Area............
Such violent tactics against peaceful rally will only expose MQM and PPP. Media should also be neutral and just in reporting. They should show true face of violent group who attacked this rally.
MQM is responsible for all this activity, they started the voice of Mohajir Suba. They have hidden agenda which they not spoke openly.
Now Nawaz League has become so desperate that they need Uzair Baloch and his kind to support this lost and forgotten league. Tch, Tch,Tch!
If MQM and Mohajir Soba Tahreek does protest rallies, it is democratic and their genuine right and Media also portrays it as positive step but when Sindhi nationalists does the same, they are being criticized and even protesters get killed during rally. Every one knows who is beyong this violence and attack but Media is also SILENT. Selective Justice by Govt, and Media. Very sad!
When NCHD workers, Nurses, Teachers tried to protest in red zone, they faced violence, but Mohajir tahreek got fruits and juices in Redzone and they passed redzone without any worry. Where is Justice and freedom to protest in democratic setups? People can protest in every city of Pakistan but if any one does in Karachi, MQM unleash such tactics to intimidate them. Very sad in the history of Pakistan. Whole nation should stand up terrorists and violent groups.
why sindhies are not allowed in Karachi! is it our weakness that we are peace loving?
All the hated and fuedal mind people get togather against the real Pakistani's.... My questions is why our fuedel mind people of Pakistan reacted badly against "Muhajir Sooba" what is the problem.. why they were not riase the voice when Province Khaiber Pakhtoon Khawah was naming, why not raise their voice aginst Hazara, Bahawal Poor, etc etc.. This people are really jalous of Urdu speaking because we are the only educated nation in Pakistan..... Our elders was built the Pakistan.. and Insha Allah we will make our own province... "Mohajir Sooba lay kar rahay gay.."
It should have been the other way around. Rest of Sind should have been demanding a new province. It is not Karachi but the rest of rural Sind that's been dealt a bad hand. Are there no schools, electricity, water, gas, jobs, industry, a modern infrastructure compared to the rest of Pakistan. If one compares Karachi to the rest of Sind Karachi has gotten more than it's fare share. In such a case why talk about deviding Sind. It could only be called Illegal Grand Grabing. And why should the Sindhi nationalist stay quite. Do they have no say on the land they have lived for thousands of years. This is exactly why the Baloch nationalist are against the Gwadar Port Project. It will bring 2 million migrants from all over Pakistan. One can imagine what will happen to the 70000 Gwadar Natives a few years later. The next thing you know someone demanding to separate Gwadar from Balochistan and call it Liaqat Pur. Simply unjust to Sindhi and to Sind.
Local government system was satisfying regional players without disturbing Provincial boundaries. PPP and their headless mafia created hurdles by destroying it. Now they are crying to save Sindh. Really pathetic team of aimless leaders inside PPP.
Every other province held protest against its division, but why only such terrorist attacks happen in Karachi only?! ...MQM maybe!! I find no other reason!
Check SC observations, JITs, Police records, Human rights reports, and wikileaks, all points fingers to the MQM which has collected heap of sophisticated weapons and have militant wings. Such people are always involved in violent politics. State has failed to stop violent and militant wings. Peaceful rally "Mohabat-e-Sindh" was attacked by those violent groups, whose politics revolve around violence, hate and division. What a bount of democracy...Mohajir Soba tahreek have all rights and privileges to do rallies in Karachi but sons of soil has NO right to do the same? Is it called Justice and Democratic setup?Shame MQM..Shame PPP!
Mohajir Soba tahreek passes red zone without any trouble with grace of PPP-MQM support but when peaceful people of Sindh do rally, they are being targeted, killed. The rally was attacked by so called Urban terrorists of Karachi. Instead of protecting rallies from violent attacks, Govt is stopping peaceful people in rally. This is sheer injustice and against human rights. Sons of soil are being victimized in democratic govt of PPP. What a shame!!! Sindhis can die with pride for the protection of their motherland but they will never bow down before the terrorists.
Uzair Baloch is a known criminal with a head money , how come he leads a rally in the presence of all the LEAs ?
have you ever heard a separate province for muhajirs in world! how foolish! if someone is labeling himself a Sindhi,he must act accordingly, rather doing conspiracies against the land which provided them shelter .
Why, "because of topi drama"
@Abdul Moiz: The reason is that it is setting a dangerous trend that you can go to any place in Pakistan and then after some years become a majority and take over that land from locals. I am sure tomorrow Quetta will see a new demand as Pakhtoons are now out running Balochs there and they could demand a separate land away from Balochs and in future Rawalpindi where Pakhtoons are rising to an Immense rate will seek A new entity based on Pakhtoon Majority and finally the sons of that land will no longer be the real owners of that land. Division on the basis of Ethnicity is dangerous and that must not be supported in any view. ANP was invited and they did not participate in this procession tells us that After Muhajir Sooba ANP will seek Quetta in Pakhtoonistan.
Lols all these years we've learned there are FOUR provinces in Pakistan ... A question comes to my mind what will the correct answer be in future and for our future generation - I should know it myself to teach my child :)
The making of a new province in sindh should be done through civilised discussion, not by firing and deaths. If some people don't want the making of a new province in sindh, they should present their point of view in non-violent ways.violence is never the solution.when there has been no violence in punjab over new provinces, than there should be no violence in sindh also over a new province.
must have been MQM
Thank God firing occurred in Non Urdu speak Non MQM area Napier Road controlled by PPP and lyari gang otherwise these people were quick to blame MQM
I dont understand the rationale behind the new province. Does demanding a seperate province make one ghaddar. If punjab can have more provinces why not sindh
WOW, so much hate from all National and Nationalist parties against something that has not even started!
There should be no double standards in making new provinces. If new provinces in punjab and KPK are being created,so new provinces in sindh should also be created in a peaceful manner. The people of sindh should be big hearted like the people of punjab and announce a new province in sindh.
I could say wow that in this procession as well we saw representative of PMLN and Marvi Memon and now they are talking about Sindhis in real sense while PPP who supposedly are representing Sindhis are nowhere to be found and infact in order to Please MQM PPP launched an Operation in Lyari and even silent on the issue of New Province in Sindh.
Why so much violence in sindh over new provinces? Resolutions for new provinces in punjab have been peacefully passed without any threats, rallies, protests or violence, so why is there so much violence in sindh over new provinces.
