Local Bodies: Awan moves IHC for local elections in federal capital

Prays court to direct respondents to take measures to ensure creation of local govt, announce date for polls.

ISLAMABAD:


Former law minister Babar Awan moved the Islamabad High Court on Thursday seeking an announcement date of local bodies election in the federal capital territory.


Awan named the capital administration division secretary, the Islamabad chief commissioner and the state as respondents in his petition. He prayed the court to direct the respondents to take necessary measures to ensure the creation of a local government and announce a date for local bodies election after completing all necessary legal formalities.

Awan maintained that Article 37 of the Constitution states: “Creation and promotion of local government institution, comprised of elected representation of the areas concerned, is the best method to meet the demands and requirements of the public’’.
