Asghar Khan petition: Govt asked for ISI political cell notification

Court asks government to hand over notification on creation of ISI political cell by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in May 1975.

ISLAMABAD:
Hearing Air Marshal (retd) Asghar Khan's petition on Thursday, the Supreme Court asked the government to hand over the notification on the creation of a political cell in the ISI by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in May 1975.

The notification has been asked for so that the logic and reasoning behind the cell's creation can be determined.

Express News reported that the court has said if the Habib bank reports are not presented by May 19, a case will be registered with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

The Habib Bank president was asked to provide bank reports on the transactions that took place in Habib bank in the 1990s.

The governor of the State Bank of Pakistan was also asked to look into the matter.

The Ministry of Defence has been asked to produce a statement on the claims made by former Inter-Services Intelligence Agency (ISI) chief Lieutenant General (retd) Assad Durrani. On Wednesday, Durrani had conceded to the role of ISI and Military Intelligence (MI) in rigging the 1990 parliamentary elections.

Correction: The story previously stated "former Mehran Bank president" instead of "current Habib Bank president". The correction has been made.
