Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) activists on Tuesday accused the Punjab University administration of promoting sectarianism at the campus in a press conference.
The press conference was called after the Jamiat’s Law College nazim Awais Aqeel was shot dead on May 13. Another student was injured in the firing. Witnesses identified the attackers as former university students, Abrar Wattoo and Imran Tarar.
Rai Haq Nawaz, the IJT’s Punjab University nazim, said that the “murderers had been helped in their escape”. He accused the university administration of encouraging miscreants.
The Punjab University spokesman refuted allegations levelled by the IJT. The spokesman said that both Wattoo and Tarar were not students at the university. He added that the administration had requested the officials concerned to launch an operation in order to get the varsity hostels vacated from illegal occupants.
The spokesman denied that the university supported any groups. He urged the IJT members to “focus on their studies and shun politics”.
