Plugging leaks: Police given a week to arrest 24 gas thieves

GUJRANWALA: A district and sessions judge on Monday gave a week to the city police to arrest 24 people suspected of stealing the gas and recover the amount determined by the utility from them.

Judge Rasheed Qamar warned the investigation officers that action would be taken against them if they failed in this regard.

The officers said investigations were already underway in these cases. The hearing was adjourned till May 21.

The petition filed by the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited chief engineer (development) accuses the police officials of negligence in investigation of the theft cases. He said some of the cases had been registered in January this year but there had been no progress so far.

SNGPL law officer Falak Naz said hundreds of thousands of rupees had to be recovered from the suspects. He said the suspects included a compressed natural gas (CNG) filling station and some other big businesses of the city.

As many as 11 of the 19 cases in Gujranwala tehsil are registered with Sabzi Mandi police station. The remaining five are in Kamoke tehsil.

Well done- this is a step in the right direction and it's not hard to understand why the Punjab is still relatively stable and progressing compared to other places in Pakistan. At least there is some accountability in Punjab.
