According to Express News correspondent Haider Naseem, it was found in an investigation that the elephant caretakers had been demanding alcohol supply to the zoo since 1992, however, it was revealed that the elephants never consumed that alcohol.
The demand for alcohol supply would be raised every winter. The caretakers also threatened the administration that if it is not supplied then the elephants might cause a monetary loss or casualties in the zoo.
The bills amounted Rs80,000 at maximum and minimum at Rs40,000.
Locally-manufactured liquor would be supplied to the zoo and the cost would be added to the food expense.
Veterinary doctors while speaking to Express News said that alcohol cannot be consumed by elephants.
Express News also reported saying that the same elephant caretakers were the ones behind Saheli’s death – a 22-year-old elephant gifted by Sri Lanka.
Barring the purchase of more alcohol, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) called for an investigation and directed the zoo administration to consult with veterinary doctors in this regard.
The zoo administration suspended the head elephant caretaker and senior elephant caretaker of the zoo.

Veterinary doctors while speaking to Express News said that alcohol cannot be consumed by elephants.
Then how the hell Zoo caretakers could demand alcohol worth Rs 80 k / month for elephants when doctors havenot recommended it ?
No wonder when fountains of corruption erupt from the topmost leadership its essence is felt at the grassroot level !
The Elephant within !
Dear participants: It is really an Interesting discussions; thanks for your contribution.
Don't you please realize if at all the keepers and/or supervisors and/or administration (whosoever) is brought on books, the case will be ultimately dismissed on the ground of insufficient or unacceptable proofs, or back-out of witness or inadequacy or applicability or inapplicability of some legal clauses, etc. etc. . All this news items and heated discussions will stand dumpted into oblivion.
Years later if this episode emerges back to your memory, you will shake it away.
.
Wonderful piece to go through.hats off to the reporter for coming up with hitherto unnoticed dimension of the issue.
@Abdul Moiz: clearly, you need to read the article again, it's good that the animals didn't get the liquor. Does it make sense even? these giant animals high on alcohol during their mating season?
And I thought only doctors had easy access to the good stuff !
The administration of this zoo should be fired. I just saw the video on ET of the elephant with leg shackles on. Eividently it is chained 24/7. This is beyond barbarism and cruelty. Can no one help these poor creatures.
Haha. This had been going on for the past twenty years?! Epic!
I want to be an elephant if they restore their quota ;)
Like President like people..
That means if the elephants never consumed alcohol then who else did? Definitely the caretakers. Pathetic! When the lives of humans have no respect in this land, can we expect of a kind treatment with animals.
The last thing on the earth you want to deal with is an drunk alcoholic Elephant during its mating season.
You could not make it up. So funny and infuriating at the same time!
You guys need to read the 5th paragraph where it clearly states "Veterinary doctors while speaking to Express News said that alcohol cannot be consumed by elephants."
This means alcohol does not help agitated elephants in any way. The zoo caretakers were just drinking and partying haha.. awesome stuff.
Don't the people running zoos need to actually know something about animals? Guess not.
Hold the zoo ADMINISTRATION High ups and bosses accountable, not some keepers... This is the irony of this country, and it is leading us to failure and anarchy...
I wouldn't be surprised if this alcohol found its way to our ever flourishing black market.
Alcohol does not calm elephants there was an incident in Assam some time back when elephants broke into and consumed beer that was being brewed in a village the elephants went on a rampage and caused the loss of life and damage to property.

The caretakers are obviously at fault but was the zoo administrator stupid?
Animals needing alcohol? Damn, I thought us humans were the only desperate creatures.
@Abdul Moiz: Not really! The Zoo administration is the one which needs to go to the Jail. Zookeepers are only the low level people and their corruption was carried out because the management let it happen and was partner to them in these misdeeds.
How low can we go! these zookeepers should be arrested and thrown in jail. They took away the alcohol which would have calmed the poor animals down and drank it themselves, leaving those poor elephants all agitated and angry. How selfish were these barbaric caretakers and why hasn't the police thrown them in jail by now? They are stealing the food of the animals and having party time every year.
