"I don't like people calling me an item girl. I think it's another way of showing talent and skills. I found it very artistic. People might criticise and label you, but there is nothing wrong in doing an item number," Nathalia told IANS in an interview.
"The word item girl doesn't hit me, I don't see this as obscene or vulgar, I found this very artistic," she added.
Nathalia will be seen dancing on item number Dan dan in Department. Choreographed by Ganesh Acharya, the soundtrack is composed by Dharam Sandeep, Bappi Lahiri and Vikram Nagi.
"The song is part of the movie and contains a lot of meaning. It's very well-placed in the film. I think, the song gave me a chance to show my talent," she said.
Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, Department, starring Sanjay Dutt, Amitabh Bachchan and Rana Daggubati, will come out May 18.
Nathalia, who started her career with modelling in India, also featured as a Kingfisher calendar girl.
She believes that her modelling helped her bag roles in Bollywood films.
"I started modelling at the right time and at the right place. And at that time only I met Ram Gopal Varma. We kept in touch. After that I was selected for Kingfisher calendar and that really helped me to be known in the industry. Right now I'm doing a film, the item number was just to launch myself in the industry," she said.
The 21-year-old is a trained Opera singer.
"I'm a trained opera singer... I'm a very artistic person. I like things related to arts, be it anything. I love singing, I learned singing for three years but acting is my passion. Singing makes me complete and add meaning to my life," she said.
Asked whether she wants to continue her singing in future, she added, "I'll be singing a song in my next movie under the banner of Ram Gopal Varma."

@Hafeez:
Mr Hafeez she is a Brazilian in Mumbai, she is not a sikh
@Sidrah Saeed: One group is feeling ashamed of their bodies as men tell them that their bodies are sinful and should remain behind black cloth
I tend to disagree with your above statement. In the Holy Quran, it is clearly stated what "The Muslim Woman should look like" and you know it. Go, study the Quran, in detail. Research yourself. You don't need to be a scholar to understand what's written in there... It is written VERY clearly in Chapter 18.
Peace...!!
@Sidrah Saeed: Instead of telling woman wot to do or not to do . Let them decide on this.If they feel comfortable then I dont see any problem in this. She is a beautiful Indian Sikh Girl settled in Brazil . Hope more Pakistani girls also get to work in showbiz
Both what this woman does and what the women who wear burkas,hijabs and abayas do are the same thing.They are surrendering to the demands of men,they are surrendering before the commands and desires of men.One group is feeling ashamed of their bodies as men tell them that their bodies are sinful and should remain behind black cloth,while the women doing item numbers are wearing loose clothes to please men.In both situations women are sacrificing themselves for the sake of praise from men.
Item songs objectify women and degrade women.Women who use their brains rather than gyrating to please men are the real artists.Vidya balan and other character actresses are artistic,they don't degrade their gender to appease men. If she wants to set an example to young girls to be strong and independent women,she should stop submitting to the demands of a male dominated society. Girls should aim to have lifelong careers and earn for themselves after completing their sutdies.Gyrating and wear revealing clothes to gain the approval and applause from men is a pathetic thing to do.Women shouldn't spend their lives trying to get the approval from men.
