In what appears to be a daunting challenge, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to double the provincial budget for education from 2% to 4%. Addressing the media on the second day of the cabinet meeting, K-P Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said the provincial government intends to spend Rs64 billion on the development of education in the next fiscal year, 2012-2013.
Iftikhar further said that the K-P government will continue taking special measures to provide maximum relief under the Bacha Khapal Rozgar and Pukhtukhwa Hunarmand Rozgar schemes.
The cabinet, he said, also gave a nod for the establishment of the Institute of Peace and Conflict Management. He further said that the institute will impart training to people on tackling war or conflict scenarios.
The minister claimed that the meeting also approved a strategy for bringing transparency in provincial financial matters.
Mian Iftikhar said that Rs200 billion have been spent on uplift schemes across the province despite a wave of terrorism.
The minister went on to add that the new policies and reforms will enhance the performance of health and education sectors at district levels. “We have also decided to set up internal audit units inside the state-run departments to make them deliver on all fronts within the domains of available resources,” he said.
Iftikhar said that cabinet members also deliberated upon the reforms for seminaries, saying they agreed to refer the matter to the concerned committee for further deliberations and discussions.
The minister said they also approved an amendment in the 1993 act pertaining to the renaming of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

I would like to urge the government of KPK to establish Khushal Khan Khattak University in district Nowshera.
A highly commendable act of Khyber Pukhtunkwa Provincial government and other provinces should follow this. This is the only way we can beat terrorism, ignorance & Jahalat. And I would recommend that they should double the education budget every year!
A great effort by the KP govt which we must appreciate and encourage. I wonder why this good news is presented in an aura of pessimism here. The worthy correspondant of this news would have done better if he had backed his pessimism (Herculian & daunting task) with some reasons.
Doesn't make a difference, inflation has increased so much in the past few years, the cost of living has increased so much.
Rs.64 billion is not much considering hyper-inflation.
This what you call as the biggest leap forward.Every sane person should appreciate the biggest allocation in the history of this province. The govt would be well advised to devise stringent means and stop the idiosyncrasies of the different heads of the educational departments, particularly the Vice Chancellors who have employed a hoard of contract workers as daily wage earners. These workers are doing nothing but to polish the boats of various heads including the vice chancellors. One V.C. has been using a laboratory to lodge his fellow villagers. This is a criminal offense and should be thoroughly investigated and the culprit should be punished
